  2. The TransFormers movie merchandise wagon continues to gather steam, as The Allspark reports on some Seibertron.com finds for new goods, including a plush Optimus Prime pillow, a Bumblebee MP3 player figure, and Mr. Potato Head as “Optimash Prime.”

To keep up or check back on TransFormers movie-related news and data, you can go to The Allspark’s TransFormers: The Movie section, which includes the trailers, cast listings, and more.

  3. Over at Newsarama, Paul Jenkins talks a little about Civil War: The Return, as well as the final New Avenger
  4. GameTrailers has a trailer for Garfield’s Nightmare, an amusing-looking platformer for the Nintendo DS.
  5. And the saga of Jennifer Strange continues to unfold, as now the Sheriff’s Office of Sacramento County has opened investigation into the DJ’s, now that evidence has been disclosed that they were fully aware of the risks, and proceeded with their addle-brained scheme anyway.

Guess what, Disc Jerkeys, being unemployed just became the least of your worries.

Elsewhere, the winner of the Wii was interviewed.

  6. Seems ol’ Billy G is quite happy with how the 360 is doing so far.

I think “blasting” might be a bit overzealous a term to use regarding Nintendo, though not so much with Sony.

  7. Go Nintendo reports that a mysterious sequel to a Nintendo game will be announced soon…
  8. zOMG, the DS has been toppled in Japan!
  9. A 9-year old boy hijacks a bunch of cars, sneaks onto an airline flight, and gets apprehended.

You know what’s to blame, don’t you?

    That’s right!

    Video games!

I swear, there is not a stick big enough to beat the stupid out of someone like this.

  10. Damn.

Just when I thought that Burnout couldn’t get any better… I find out that it probably can’t.

  11. “Ziff Davis Undervalued, Unwanted”

Guess people aren’t exactly lining up to buy. Maybe if they got rid of that one guy…

  12. Once more, Jeremy Parish sticks it to the Virtual Console’s latest, and not without good reason.

Except this isn’t even steak every night. Closer to ramen. I like ramen, but not in vast quantities per timescale.

  13. Alright, Mario Party 8 videos!

Er, I do hope this is online-enabled…

  14. From #megaman-network on mIRC:

The Daily ‘Shroom – 1/18/07

Thursday, January 18th, 2007
  1. Via The Allspark, behold… Galvatron! As he is to appear in his upcoming one-shot.

What has me most curious about this is how it plays out; after all, Megatron becomes Galvatron traditionally, but they’re at the very genesis of this continuity… would they really consider a change so soon? Or to show us the future?

Or might they follow the original character plan, and make it so he’s a seperate Decepticon altogether…? That could be intriguing…

  2. They also report the 2005Boards have an image of Megatron’s vehicle mode from the upcoming motion picture.

I’d be happier to know that Megatron has an arm cannon were it not for the fact that I think Bumblebee and Optimus are slated to have them, too.

  3. And, if you still want more, have some Starscream and Ratchet toy test-shots.
  4. Newsarama goes for a double-whammy today, and presents us two more of the New Avengers lineup.

Very interesting, though not entirely unexpected.

    …and… the leader…?

Anyway, just one more to go… but who will it be?

  5. Sigh, this is just so annoying.

Nintendo is running a contest to win one of five Captain N: The Game Master – The Complete Series DVD box sets.

But it’s only good for US residents, and my MyNintendo account clearly labels me as being in Canada.

Damnation. I can’t say this pleases me. Oh, sure, I can enter the contest for a statue of Link that I probably can’t fit anywhere, nevermind afford to ship, but this?

  6. Mystique in X-Men 4?

Hell, I didn’t even know they were moving ahead with it.

When we brought up the fact that the last time we saw Mystique she was depowered, Romijn noted that, “Well, you know, they can always turn these things back around! It’s not like I was dead or anything.”

…she doesn’t read many comics, does she?

  7. Irish to be charged more for PS3.

Drunken fights over stock expected to follow. More as it develops.

  8. Yesterday, I showed some sympathy towards those who ran the radio contest which cost a young mother her life, all in the attempts to win a Wii, and wished them the best, since it seemed like an accidental occurence.

Well, today I hereby revoke that sympathy, at least to any who knew the risks and proceeded.

…is it too late for police to investigate?

  9. Go Nintendo has gotten ahold of some new Sonic and the Secret Rings info.

Sonic now has customizable skills. It is said that there are somewhere around 100 skills that Sonic can learn. Skills range from how Sonic handles, to his moves, to special abilities. Sonic holds 4 rings that allow for 500 points worth (each) of skills. Experience points are earned through the main game.

    Among other interesting points…

  10. Slashdot reports that Germany is seeking to have Europe ban all violent games.

That just sucks beyond words… and actually makes Jack Thompson seem like a decent guy by comparison.

    Well, almost.

Kotaku offers their own view of the matter:

“Nice to see Germany pushing an agenda across Europe with the help of Italian allies again.”

  11. Chris Kohler of Game|Life touches on it further, and also looks at some more domestic proposals, such as literally locking all mature games behind the counter, and making it “illegal to sell games that feature ‘bestiality,’ among other things, to minors.

Wait, was that last one even a problem? Hell…

As for the lock-up, no big whoop. Older gamers like me could just get a hit of nostalgia from when we’d go to Toys R Us back in the day and grab one of those inventory tags to take to the weird room/thing behind the registers…

  12. “Kids spend more time playing video games than watching TV.”

Well, no duh, have you seen some of the crap that’s out there these days?

It’s kind of funny, though, I’m pretty sure I heard people complaining the same way when I was a kid…

  13. If you’re in Brooklyn next Friday, maybe you’d like to party down with the Kotaku crew.

I’d love to, but I sorta blew that by going to NYC for a Wii (speaking of which, I still gotta write that up. Maybe later today).

The Daily ‘Shroom – 1/17/07

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007
  1. TransFormers World 2005, via The Allspark, has some new, color images of the Fast Action Battlers Ironhide and Optimus Prime from the movie toyline.Looking pretty slick, can’t wait to see the full-size figures in full color.
  2. …such as the Decepticon, Blackout.
  3. IGN has some new images showing off Peter Parker’s return to the infamous black Spider-Man costume, starting in February. The implications are that during Civil War, or even its aftermath, something bad happens… but what?
  4. Rumors have been flying lately about a new Ghostbusters game for the XBox 360 in development, but the question to accompany the videos and screenshots seen has been, “is this for real?”IGN of the UK can happily assure you that it is indeed for real… but also, on hold, due to licensing issues.

In the meantime, however, the team isn’t remaining idle as they are working on TimeO:

The game follows the adventures of two die-hard New Yorkers. They get trapped deep in the shadow world of a parallel New York. The city itself is a war machine threatening to wipe out our world and they have three days to stop it. As soon as the Ghostbusters IP issue is resolved, the whole team will go back to Ghostbusters.”

With any luck, maybe the game will be good enough to send other developers after older movie licenses, perhaps to allow a good licensed game to be made without the issues that deadlines of current movies impose.

    Back To The Future, anyone?

  5. Evil Avatar reports that there is an interest in feedback about XBox Live and its services.Should be interesting. Unless higher than 85% of the feedback involves microtransactions such as EA implements. Then it’s just funny.
  6. Good news for the Wii-less Canuck… “many” Future Shops are putting new stock out later today.
  7. And evidently, Best Buy is carrying that same torch for We The People.
  8. I don’t know whether to earmark this as sad news, or justice served. In any event, Go Nintendo has linked a follow-up story regarding the lady who died from water intoxication while trying to win a radio contest so she could get a Wii for her young’uns.Apparently, 10 people were fired from the station on Tuesday, including 3 DJs.

Despite the tragedy, I can’t help but feel a bit bad for the 10 fired. From where I sit, it looks like an accident born purely of ignorance, but an innocent sort of ignorance. Now (assuming they have families), they have the burden of unemployment on top of perhaps that of guilt from the incident.

Perhaps it’s simply my own currently-unemployed status affecting my opinion, but I can still feel for that.

Here’s hoping that things can work out as well as possible at this point.

  9. Remember how cool it was to design your own courses in Excitebike? Yeah, most of us did nothing but place one giant ramp after another, but dammit, these were OUR ramps! And they were cool!Well, unknown to Go Nintendo (and myself), the website for Diddy Kong Racing DS has revealed some tantalizing new info, including the following:

    * Wish Race mode gives you complete freedom to design, build, and race on the track of your dreams, thanks to excellent use of Touch Screen controls. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection compatibility lets you share your work of genius with everyone. Of course!

NOW we are talking, ladies and gentlemen!

I missed out on the N64 iteration of this game, and there are quite a few changes, but I’d still like to give it a go. Hopefully, the WiFi will be better than the “WTF”-ness of Mario Kart DS.

Pity that Banjo and Conker couldn’t stick around, though.

  10. Hotel Dusk is a game I’ve spoken very little about, but have a sort of peripheral curiousity about.Fortunately for me, GN reports their website has just seen a major update, so maybe I can look into it a bit more.
  11. New screens have surfaced for TMNT for the PS2.
  12. Hmm, so SEGA is going to stop producing the Dreamcast GD-ROM, eh?I wonder if this will have any bearing on that Segagaga translation project I’d heard about…
  13. “IGN picks PS3 as best new console of 2006.”

…don’t look to me for comment, I’m just stunned.

  14. Hmm, I wonder if Jack Thompson’s booked a flight to Germany after hearing about this
  15. Iron Man has a major motion picture coming soon… but is it “The End” for him already?
  16. Bone creator Jeff Smith taking on Shazam? Sounds great to me!
  17. And finally, the fifth New Avenger is…

The Daily ‘Shroom – 1/16/07

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007
  1. The Allspark has lots of new TransFormers movie toys to see today, including an unnamed video game robot, Fast Action Battler Ironhide, an unnamed celphone robot, and a Megatron and two different Optimus Prime molds.
  2. Wedding bells are ringing in Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog #174, according to this solicitation.

Plus, Eggman in Vegas? It happens in Sonic X #19, both issues available this April.

  3. Word is coming down from Atomic Fire and The Mega Man Network that yes, Virginia, there is going to be a Mega Man ZX2.
  4. Given that Sony switches focus to the PS2 whenever someone asks about the lagging sales of the PS3… yeah, I figured this could be the case.
  5. Look out, Europe! The Minis are on the march!
  6. Psst! Mr. ResettiThe GoNintendo Mole says that this is the week for Wii and DS at Game Crazy.

    Pass it on.

  7. As the month of January goes, it seems that 2007′s version is turning out to be fairly decent, game-wise.

Not that I think anything here is quite the “ZOMGWTF”-ness of Resident Evil 4 last year, but still nice.

  8. Could a picture of a kidnapping victim appearing on XBox Live lead to more trouble down the road?
  9. Seems that the Japanese site for Wario: Master of Disguise (American title) has updated with some videos, showing off how to become a quick-change artist in just a few easy steps.
  10. Earlier reports of a bit of rumoring of a new Castlevania game have now been accompanied by a scan from the EGM issue by Kotaku.

Other than visual confirmation, however, nothing new to see here.

Unless you like Maria. Though it’s not a new picture.

  11. And now… *drumroll* …the FOURTH New Avenger IS…

The Weekend Wrap-Up – 1/14/07

Monday, January 15th, 2007
  1. The Allspark has links to images of TransFormers movie toys known as “Fast Action Battlers” (I hear they’re simply FAB). These are unlikely to be the “main” movie toys, as they reason:

While we can’t be 100% sure, we do know that the Starscream pictured in this auction doesn’t match with the previous toy we’ve seen.

Plus, the transformations seem a bit more simplistic. These are probably going to be the “basics” for the movie.

Anyway, here are Starscream, Optimus Prime, and one of my favorites so far, Jazz.

  2. Sounds like the PlayStation 3 isn’t as “Pornable” as its handheld sibling, as Sony refuses to allow HD T&A to associate with their patented, troublesome Blu-Ray technology, forcing producers to go to HD-DVD.

XXXBox 369. There, I made the joke for you. Moving on, then…

  3. Like the Angry Video Game (formerly Nintendo) Nerd? Wanna see more of his antics?

Check out his latest update to see how you can help.

  4. Press The Buttons has some ideas of what the pending EGM Castlevania announcement will be.
  5. Racketboy continues his “Hidden Gems” series, covering games you may have missed on consoles past.

    The latest installment: Sony PlayStation.

  6. Next Gen’s interview with O3 reveals that the GameCube isn’t dead yet as they prep their new shoot ‘em up for Nintendo’s previous console effort.

In addition, they offer that “backwards compatibility offers small publishers low-risk opportunities.”

  7. Zelda cartoons? onNintendo has got you covered.

Or, you can just buy the DVD with every episode included, plus the live-action Mario Bros. segments.

And in case you missed it before, don’t forget to check out Sub Tank’s Zelda Flash cartoon parody of the intro.

  8. If you’re a fan of 24 (and I know some people who are), and own an XBox 360, then Major Nelson (through Evil Avatar) has some good news for you.
  9. System collectors, get ready to import, as Go Nintendo reports that China are getting two special edition GBA SPs, featuring the images of Mario and DK.
  10. Fashion for the discerning female retrogamer: the NES purse.
  11. Still want a Wii? Go Nintendo tells you how to snoop around for one.
  12. Life in retail can be a living Hell. Trust me, I know. And EB Games is evidently no different, as a Go Nintendo reader demonstrates.
  13. Now this is the story, all about how this guy’s life got flipped, turned upside-down. So please have a seat, and grab your Wii remote, and he’ll tell you how he became the Prince of a town called Tokyo…
  14. The Best of CES, courtesy of Todd Umbarger’s Jaggies.
  15. Radio contests can be incredibly stupid, and this is why.

Tragic, to be sure, but perhaps not as tragic as the fact that I’ll bet few learn anything from this before the next one happens…

I at least hope the station coughed up the Wii, or at least A Wii, for her three children.

  16. Good news, you can save $100 on a PS3!

Bad news, it requires giving up your PS2 to do it!

Your own discretion as to whether or not it’s worth it, given the spotty emulation issues.

  17. London’s outdoor Wii demos.

No word of requiring a credit card to play.

  18. Naturally, after citing the worst game endings ever, it’s only natural that CVG would go on to make a list of what they see as the best game endings ever.
  19. 20 years ago today, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was released to the masses

…and you assholes didn’t like it.

    BAH.

  20. Kotaku looks back at the classic Super Mario 3 commercial from the game’s release, though I don’t recall this particular variation at all…
  21. Remember Maniac Mansion? I never played it, but I certainly remember Nintendo Power‘s coverage of it, as well as the Family Channel having a TV show based on it.

If you are/were a fan, you might be interested in the Maniac Mansion desktop wallpaper, courtesy of Kotaku and the Maniac Mansion Shrine.

  22. Interesting link from News4Gamers.

Sex sells, and I’m not sure whether this sex is supposed to be selling Stuff magazine or Nintendo Wiis, but I’m sure these videos will likely sell plenty of both.

  23. Newsarama’s Steve Fritz takes a look at the soon-to-be released Invincible Iron Man DVD, among several others.

The Daily ‘Shroom – 1/13/07

Saturday, January 13th, 2007
  1. 22 years is a long time to be doing any job, but Juana Tingdale has been with Nintendo for that long, and on March 5th she will be vacating her spot as VP of Licensing to Steve Singer, who has been with the company since 1999.

Congratulations to Mr. Singer, and best of luck to Ms. Tingdale in her future endeavors.

  2. If you’re curious as to what the Venom of Spider-Man 3 will look like, then it’s a good thing you can always count on licensed products to give you that glimpse you so desperately seek.

Even though it’s preliminary, I approve.

  3. Evil Avatar says that there is going to be a US release of Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix, complete with a 3D remake of Chain of Memories.

Oh, and some stuff about Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Guitar Hero: ’80′s Edition on PS2.

  4. What in the bluest Hell?

I hadn’t heard any rumor about Microsoft buying Capcom before now…

    Mega Man X 360?

The idea appeals to me only if it turns out that Bill Gates is the world’s biggest MegaMan Legends fan.

  5. Sonic and the Secret Rings has box-art, in Japan at least.
  6. Behold, new Dragon Quest IX screens!
  7. EGM says they’ve got an “exclusive scoop on the next Castlevania installment.” And then it goes on to cite that if you liked Symphony of the Night to be sure to check it out.

    Interesting…

  8. I imagine this news is cheerworthy, as it seems that the Dead Or Alive movie is skipping American theaters and going straight to DVD.
  9. So Milkman says that no one hates Luke Smith (question 6).

Why is this in The Daily ‘Shroom?

    Because it’s news to me.

  10. The next member of the New Avengers is a bit of a strange one

–LBD “Nytetrayn”

The Daily ‘Shroom – 1/12/07

Friday, January 12th, 2007
  1. Good news!

Crazy Taxi is coming to PSP!

    Bad news!

    Ever heard of Sniper Studios?

Fortunately, GameSpot has interviewed the associate-producer, so hopefully that will answer a few things.

If it’s good, I may actually have a new title to grab for my PSP, as I loves me some Cuuuuraaaaaazy Taxi. And so far, it sounds promising with multiplayer.

Now, we just need a version for Wii.

  2. Hmm, sounds like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is going to break the 50MB limit set on XBox downloads…
  3. In a bit of coolness in the area of art, this year’s “i am 8-bit” exhibition will premiere at GDC.

I can’t wait to see what they’ve got this year.

  4. G4 is getting a new show called Code Monkeys, a cartoon animated to look like an oldschool video game which follows, appropriately, a group of game developers from the 80s.

Now watch it turn out to be good, and Canada not get it.

  5. Sounds like the plan is for Dragon Quest IX to launch by the end of the year.
  6. In addition, Square-Enix is going to make an announcement this year regarding the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy.

…holding your breath is ill-advised at this stage, watch this space for further details.

  7. “Reowr,” indeed.
  8. Is this worth bragging about yet? Eh, take what you can get, I guess.

I’m sticking with what Peter Moore said awhile back, I think it was to the tune of “ask me about things on January 1st, 2008, and we’ll see where we are.”

  9. Huh, looks like SEGA can’t take a joke.

    Let’s hope this doesn’t become a trend.

And shouldn’t SEGA of America be on this, if it’s such a problem?

As expected, though, the users have begun to retaliate.

    Beware explicitness.

  10. Kotaku has the numbers surrounding how everyone did with their system sales last year.
  11. Ok, so the killed Konami games aren’t killed after all.
  12. Since I know that some friends of mine, among others, are into this whole 24 thing, I figured I’d pass along the word that McFarlane Toys are going to be releasing two sets of Jack Bauer figures.
  13. In addition, NECA and Action Figure Xpress are going to be releasing a variant mini-statue of He-Man’s daddy.
  14. And the second New Avenger is…

My money is on Captain America.

Death Note on the Download

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Earlier yesterday, Viz Media sent out a press release regarding the online availability of the Death Note anime, for rental and to own, all while the show is still airing in Japan, which is cited as an unprecedented move.

That’s the good news.

Not so much bad news as it is curious, the method of how this sort of transaction may be accomplished is not mentioned, though in theory a “rental” could be a matter of streaming, versus downloading to “own.”

Click the “Read More” link for the full press release.

The Daily ‘Shroom – 1/11/07

Thursday, January 11th, 2007
  1. Ah-ha, I just knew I’d heard of iPhone somewhere else before.
  2. Oh, great, ANOTHER controller lawsuit. And this time, everyone’s a target.

    …even you.

Well, maybe not you, back in the corner there.

  3. Want a Peter Jackson-directed Hobbit movie?

    Tough.

    Sorry, folks.

  4. If you like Marvel Zombies, Evil Dead, or just contests in general, then you just might like this.
  5. Well, Konami just up and out of nowhere cancelled a bunch of PS3 and Wii titles. Fortunately, most were no-name stuff with little info, it seems, though one should mourn Gradius.
  6. So Japan is getting a gold PSP.

    Hmm.

I half expect promotion to include John Cena holding it on a leather strap with the WWE logo spinning on the screen.

I don’t know, though. I guess it doesn’t look horrible, but I don’t think it’s a color I’d choose. Unless I was really trying to pitch the “bling-bling, ching-ching” image.

Still, Japan has six colors now? Shouldn’t that be spread around more? It could entice someone who doesn’t want a PSP into getting one, because it’s the right color for them.

Sure, it sounds shallow, but I find I myself am choosier over the colors of my portables than I am my consoles; a white Wii doesn’t bother me, but you’ve seen all the bitching I’ve done until Nintendo finally released a black DS Lite in America.

  7. Hmm, GameDaily thinks that maybe MTV is in talks with Ziff-Davis.

I wonder if MTV pays their people in a timely fashion…

  8. What the hell, Emmies for everyone!

    Or is that “Emmys?”

  9. “Fictional story about violent video game causes real censorship.”

I don’t really have anything to add here, but do read the post, because it’s interesting to think of where it might go.

  10. Extra! Extra! Nintendo franchises kick ass!
  11. What’s this? Sony making a smart move that could help its Blu-Ray and PSP markets?

    ‘Bout time.

  12. First entrants, now sponsors. Where will the Slamdance/Super Columbine Massacre RPG snowball wind up next?
  13. Wow, Nyko is just all over this Wii thing. Now, in addition to the rechargable battery packs, they’re bringing in wireless sensor bars, too.

Reggie wasn’t kidding when he said this is where third-parties would shine.

  14. Newsarama has an interesting scoop, wherein Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis is going to reveal the ensemble who will form the new New Avengers.

    The catch?

    One day at a time.

Each weekday starting today and through next Friday, we?ll reveal one new team member a day ? eight in all ? along with Bendis? thoughts on why he selected that character and what role he or she will be playing for the team. And then we?ll wrap things up with a talk about the foreseeable future of the whole [Avengers] assembled team.

The Daily ‘Shroom – 1/10/07

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007
  1. Good news for Sonic and comic fans!

Over on the Bumbleking Comics Forums, Ian “Potto” Flynn has announced that Archie Comics will once again be taking part in the annual Free Comic Book Day on the 5th of May this year.

Not only will there be a free, all-new Little Archie story titled “Legend of the Lost Lagoon,” but True Blue and his Crew also have their own all-new story by Ian Flynn titled “Unburying the Hatchet.”

What could be better than Dr. Eggman’s killer robot, Metal Sonic? How about the real thing! What has turned Sonic against his friends in Knothole, and who among our heroes has to power to stop the true blue hero-gone-bad?

The cool styling of Tracey Yeardley! has the task of pencils, with Jim Amash taking care of the inks.

Oh, and of course, an all-new cover by none other than Patrick “Spaz” Spaziante.

    Don’t miss it!

  2. Press The Buttons today clarified that MSNBC are jerks for leading us to false conclusions, as Blockbuster will continue game rentals, they’re just ditching subsidiaries.

Does that include GameRush, though? Or just that Rhino thing I barely even heard of and never saw?

  3. After announcing that they met their shipping targets for the PS3, Sony’s stock rose 6 percent.

    Well, sort of.

They nailed the US, but failed the Japan.

  4. Get into gaming. The work aspect of it.
  5. Want to get into the games industry? Of course you do. If you live (or can get to) the Seattle, Washington area, the Game Employment & Education Conference could be your ticket into gaming.
