“God of War, Digivolve Into… TETRIS?! WTF?”

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

1) So the guy who made God of War has lost interest in storytelling.

—–

2) Evidently, Nintendo hates us, and conveniently, there are 10 reasons why.

As I’m sure no one would be surprised by, I’m a Nintendo fan, and I do have a few issues with the list.

Nintendo aren’t saints, there’s definitely some issues from the past, “sins of the father,” one might say. I’m not trying to polish a halo around Nintendo’s collective head, just issue some debate to the points made above.

1: The Wii name. Like it, love it, or hate it, it’s here to stay, Nintendo’s stated their reasons, and part of it being that “Wii” is pretty much universal, something “Revolution” would not have been. That said, let’s hear a better name for it than either “Wii” or “Revolution.”

2) I’ve never had to blow the dust out of a game cartridge since the NES. Ever.

Additionally, while I don’t think Nintendo made the right decision going with cartridges, I don’t think they made the wrong one, either. Prior to N64′s development, SEGA CD, CDi, Jaguar, TurboCD, and 3DO were your systems showing off what CDs could do, and it just wasn’t as grand as it would later become, with the PlayStation. After Sony showed “this shit can kick some ass,” well, it became another ballgame, but I imagine to change things on N64 could have caused further delays and more turmoil.

Should N64 have used CDs? Probably, yeah(though lack of load times was generally appreciated). For sure.

Was it wrong of them to go with cartridges? Not exactly, they still made a good showing with carts.

3) A tragedy, I admit, but it did have a few neat games that I think would be neat to see reformated for Wii download play as a standard game. I hear Wario Land for the VB is one of the series’ best.

4) Yeah, that is a bit of overkill. While I’ve heard that none are really terrible in their own individual right, it sounds like many of them can be more redundant than Mega Man sequelization if you’ve played others.

5) Not even going to justify this by debating against it.

6) Can’t argue this one.

7) Too far? Give me a break, if Nintendo didn’t do it, everyone else would have.

8) GameCube didn’t really fail, it just didn’t have a dominant market share. Big difference between not having a larger market share and not turning a profit, which is the main issue here.

As for the retro stuff? Yeah, the games were a bit of a rip, especially compared to Japan, but damn, that limited-edition GBA SP was hot, and I’m still pissed that I can’t own one of those, while “limited-edition” platinum GameCubes are in abundance…

9) These are just about the only sports games I play. Keep ‘em coming, says I. If I want “real” baseball or tennis, I’ll go outside.

10) Poor baby. :( This is why I seldom tread into rumors unless they hold a particular interest, and clearly note that it is a rumor.

Random story: Nintendo also used to have a cab company, if memory serves, among other businesses.

—–

3) Evidently, the country of Japan decided to get a second job.

—–

4) Kudos to Sony, if this doesn’t involve spyware and the like.

—–

5) Plenty of things annoy me about the Mega Man compilations. One thing would be that they seem to be the ONLY ones Capcom will put on Nintendo, not counting that one little bundle of love coming for the GBA, while collections like this and others(Street Fighter) stick to PS2, PSP, and maybe XBox.

—–

6) South Park‘s Matt Stone and Trey Parker chat with IGN about Tom Cruise, Family Guy, and constantly creating controversy.

Q: You guys have been on for ten years. You have plush toys. You have collectibles. You’ve got wireless games. Apparently you even have a travel sweepstakes. Are you guys afraid of becoming respectable?

Trey Parker: No. Look at the s**t we do, you know?

Matt Stone: It was, like, our worst nightmare was winning the Emmy. We were just like, “Oh, God.” That was our nightmare.

Trey Parker: It really was. Winning the Emmy really was like, you’re kind of the punk rock kid at school, and suddenly you get Student of the Month. And you’re like, “This isn’t cool.”

Good stuff.

7) Following in the footsteps of their Why Game Developers Hate Game Reviewers piece, GameDaily now has Why Video Game Journalism Sucks and Why Gamers Hate Certain Companies.

Man, lotta hate going around…

—–

8) Joystiq and Gameworld take a look at if the PSP’s number is up.

—–

9) Ouch, guess Nintendo isn’t all sweetness and nice on repairs after all, though I imagine if enough of a case is made, they may change their stance.

Not that they’re all bad on it. Either way, fifty bucks, not too bad. Sort of says “be more careful” without totally collapsing your gonads for negligence or accidents.

It is business, after all.

I do wonder if people are bending the top portion back too far, though.

10) Awesome, a lost Penny Arcade comic.

—–

11) More Animal Crossing The Movie stuff.

—–

12) GAMEPRO TV!!!!!!

Sucks To Be You, I Guess.

Monday, July 17th, 2006
1) Well, it sounds like The Halo Graphic Novel is good….though maybe the movie script wasn’t.

—–

2) Wow, sucks to be in Germany, I guess, at least as far as Dead Rising is concerned.

I know I’d hate to be deprived of putting Servbot heads on zombies because someone I never even met said I couldn’t handle it.

Speaking of which, check out that clown’s buttons. Servbot!!! :D

—–

3) Wow, sucks to be in the UK, I guess, at least as far as the Wii is concerned.

—–

4) o/~ It’s the end of gam-ing as we know it, and I feel fiiiiiiine… o/~

Or not. I’m sorta conflicted, really.

—–

5) Sony declares UMD movies dead; consumers declare they thought they already were.

—–

6) Gamespot cracks down on cracking DS Lite reports that have left Sony fans cracking up.

—–

7) Son of a bitch, I wanna meet Mario!

—–

8) Kickass, Richard Donner(guy who produced the first movie-and-a-half of Superman, upon which Superman Returns carries on from) is going to be writing some of the upcoming comics. Nice.

—–

9) Whenever you’re in trouble and are filled with doubt, stop, take a deep breath, and ask “What would GameSpy do?”

—–

10) Outlook on Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

—–

11) Hmm, an animated Dragonlance movie, eh>

—–

12) Now this is a classy rug…

—–

13) Pauline, she-a returns!

—–

14) Hmm, Kotaku has a rather interesting chat with someone from Sony regarding Kutaragi and some internal strife regarding the PS3.

Supposedly.

—–

15) Kewl, Mario’s Super Maze. Mommy, I wanna goooooooooo…!

—–

16) That there is a right-awesome Mega Man-themed case mod.

—–

17) ANOTHER new Wii button?!

—–

18) Pre-Beast Wars Megatron is looking oh-so good, yesss…

But I’m sort of torn on the re-release of 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime. A blue gun? No…

Interesting, mildly amusing quote from teh intarwebs:

1) This is kind of cool; I knew about the Moogle, but the others? It’s like Mario vs. 8-Bit Theater now. Or such would be my hope. This is sort of like what I’d hoped for in terms of the notion of Final Fantasy characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl when it was suggested, though the idea of Cloud and Sephiroth, two characters credited with helping put PlayStation on the map, at least RPG-wise… that appeals to me, in a similar way as Snake does.

—–

2) Peter Moore likes Sonic Wild Fire. w00t.

—–

3) Sony? Arrogant? Sony Computer Entertainment boss Phil Harrison doesn’t think so, he just thinks a lot of things get taken out of context.

Maybe he’s right, since they’re still #1 with consumers.

—–

4) Meanwhile, Microsoft isn’t doing so hot in Japan. Hey, MS, here’s an idea: get someone who DOESN’T have a name like “Darren Huston” to run things there, and maybe they’ll open up a little more.

—–

5) Someone outside the general gaming community takes a look at why Wii will win.

—–

6) …it’s YOUR fault the PS3 is the way it is.

…funny, though, that the topic of BluRay isn’t really brought up there… isn’t that the big thing driving up the price?

—–

7) PS3/Wii poll comparisons.

Now, as you can clearly see here in Exhibit A, the Wii contingent is formed in the shape of Pac-man, about to devour his competition. Now, I ask you, can there BE any clearer proof that Nintendo is going to kick serious ass in the coming generation? I think not.

Thank you.

—–

8) Fuck, PS3 problems seemed far more interesting before they started coming EVERY DAMN WEEK.

—–

9) IGN is out to unlock the secrets of the Wii controllers.

Hmm, seems like there’d be SOME analog button on there…

“Developers tell IGN Wii that they are expecting to get classic Wii controllers in early September, which suggests that Nintendo is serious about providing this third input alternative for Virtual Console endeavors.”

Hot dog.

—–

10) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now known as… TMNT?

I think it’s funny that it seems so strange…

—–

11) Sounds like theaters have a special lenticular Spider-man 3 poster

—–

12) Knowing full and well that I am not a sports fan… this is still pretty damn cool.

—–

13) A few new Super Paper Mario screens, with some Bowser love. :D

—–

14) Next-Gen looks at three great design evils, according to Peter Molyneux, Jonathan Smith and Simon Byron.

I’m sort of with Simon, to a degree.

—–

15) Speechless…

—–

16) Joystiq brings us some game ideas worth stealing.

I like the Dragon Quest VIII one, about where you can wander for hours and still get something out of it.

—–

17) Kid buys porn UMD instead of PSP game; legality ensues.

…I didn’t even know they made porn UMDs here in the US.

—–

18) …Nice tattoo.

—–

19) Mmmmmm, Papa John’s pizza

—–

20) Press The Buttons and a comment from Slashdot add to yesterday’s Next-Gen story regarding gaming mascots and Sonic.

Koop-tastic

Made another post over at [info]scans_daily, this time starring Valiant’s rendition of those giant turtles everyone loves to hate, and hates to love…

The Koopas!

“‘Zune?’ Isn’t That What I Do On A Date?”

Thursday, July 13th, 2006
1) “ZUNE?! OH MY GOD WHAT A STUPID NAME WHAT’S A ‘ZUNE’ ANYWAY? MICROSOFT IS RUINED! XBOY/XPOD WAS SUCH A BETTER NAME!…” and so on.Go ahead, you know you want to. You know who you are. Don’t worry, we won’t say anything.—–

2) Like EA, love ‘em, or hate ‘em, the fact that they’re making a number of games for Wii can really be seen as a good thing for the console, in a way.

—–

3) News4Gamers looks at their history with Nintendo, with a brief check of what Nintendo’s problem has been up until recently, and if they may overcome it.

—–

4) EGM looks at six bands inspired by our favorite pasttime.

…no, NOT baseball, STFU and GTFO, lol.

—–

5) Shrek 3? It is to be. But who will we see?

Sounds good to me!

—–

6) o/~ Spider-Girl, Spider-Girl! Does whatever a spider…

…crap.

Just pretend it works, ok?

—–

7) Can’t remember if I reported this before, but IGN’s sort of keeping an ongoing chronicle of their Rockman ZX adventures.

—–

8) Sonic Wild Fire. New screens.

So it looks like it runs on a more widely-expanded version of a Sonic bonus stage, but at least this seems like more fun than “collect a million rings and blue balls in 20 seconds!”

—–

9) Spy Hunter: Nowhere To Run still looks like it might be a blast, though I favor the Interceptor parts over Alex Decker’s on-foot missions at this point. I still hope Midway can bring this one together, and I think they just might.

Could do with a Cube version, tho.

—–

10) Next-Generation takes a close-up look at the growing trend of in-game advertising.
