Sony slapped with another patent suit
Friday, July 14th, 2006Oooh, wow, Sony might just be in a position to get their collective balls busted… again.

“‘Zune?’ Isn’t That What I Do On A Date?”
Thursday, July 13th, 20062) Like EA, love ‘em, or hate ‘em, the fact that they’re making a number of games for Wii can really be seen as a good thing for the console, in a way.
—–
3) News4Gamers looks at their history with Nintendo, with a brief check of what Nintendo’s problem has been up until recently, and if they may overcome it.
—–
4) EGM looks at six bands inspired by our favorite pasttime.
…no, NOT baseball, STFU and GTFO, lol.
—–
5) Shrek 3? It is to be. But who will we see?
Sounds good to me!
—–
6) o/~ Spider-Girl, Spider-Girl! Does whatever a spider…
…crap.
Just pretend it works, ok?
—–
7) Can’t remember if I reported this before, but IGN’s sort of keeping an ongoing chronicle of their Rockman ZX adventures.
—–
8) Sonic Wild Fire. New screens.
So it looks like it runs on a more widely-expanded version of a Sonic bonus stage, but at least this seems like more fun than “collect a million rings and blue balls in 20 seconds!”
—–
9) Spy Hunter: Nowhere To Run still looks like it might be a blast, though I favor the Interceptor parts over Alex Decker’s on-foot missions at this point. I still hope Midway can bring this one together, and I think they just might.
Could do with a Cube version, tho.

If I Tried To Watch That Movie, I’D Be The One DOA.
Wednesday, July 12th, 20061) The ONLY thing that keeps me from saying “Fuck you, Nintendo” is the simple fact that I can’t afford one right now, anyway.
Only thing.
—–
2) Toastyfrog thinks Mega Man 2 is the greatest thing since peanut-butter met chocolate, and you should, too.
—–
3) Canadian site NintendoRevolution.ca(lucky them on the name, now they don’t look like they’re tied to only one system… so much) takes a look at how Wii must learn from our mistakes.
“The failure of the Nintendo Gamecube marked a pivotal change in direction for Nintendo. No longer could Nintendo simply whip up an inferior console with conventional controllers and mediocre third party support, slap Mario’s name on a few first person games, and dominate the console race. Sadly, Nintendo’s slogan of being a “pure gaming system” just didn’t fly, along with a few other things. These are the top ten reasons why the Gamecube failed.”
And hey, while it may not have been an ideal replacement for Mario as a launch title, Luigi’s Mansion fucking rocks.
…and since when is PS2′s graphics better than GameCube? I don’t remember Dreamcast’s being worse, either.
—–
4) Hmm, I wonder what this could mean for the new-gen game consoles, like Wii’s “always on” bit. It’s supposed to use very little energy this way, but…
—–
5) God, I hope this marks the end of “Blue! Blue! Blue!”
I still want to see numbers from that campaign.
—–
6) Seems more and more people are making lists of games that must be downloaded on Nintendo’s Virtual Console…
This same piece is also in the new GamePro magazine, so…
—–
…and they’re planning a SEQUEL. GOD.
…fuck, and THERE’S MORE!
—–
8) New Zelda: Twilight Princess art! w00t!
—–
9) If you like Street Fighter and are going to the San Diego Comic Con, check this out.
—–
10) Like many others who’ve played it, GameSpy seems to love Rockman ZX.
But Rez’ll still hate it.
—–
11) While I don’t particularly care for Call of Duty 3 myself, I’m glad to hear that Wii is getting it. Maybe my dad would like that…
—–
12) I… I have a collection like this… it’s just not here right now.
Really.
*sobs*
Seriously, let me just say, “Holy HELL, that is one awesome collection!”
—–
13) Um, ok, at least Sony is trying new things…

14) Hey, the Noid rocks!

“Ok, MAYBE It Was Just A LITTLE Racist…”
Tuesday, July 11th, 20061) So evidently, Sony was looking to team with SEGA back in the 16-bit era, as well. Neat piece here interviewing Tom Kalinske, ex-prez of the Home for Hedgehogs.
—–
2) “Keep firing; convert the heathens!” “Got him!” “No, you just winged him and made him a Unitarian.”
—–
3) “Hi, my name is Jason, and I have a bone to pick with Sony…”
—–
4) For some reason, it bothers me more that Sony pulled the new ad campaign than it does that they did it to start.
—–
5) I want one of these. I’m curious to see how close Mario and I are in height.
—–
6) Midway boss defends Sony. Says he’s optimistic about price drops through the life of the system.
I sure hope so.
—–
7) Yet more “what I could get with $600.”
It’s really getting old. No one bitched this long about the 3DO.
FINE, IT’S THE FUCKING CADILLAC OF GAME MACHINES, YOU PREFER A CHEVY, WE GET IT.
…and don’t anyone start with me about Chevies, I’m not much a car person, I just arbitrarily grabbed something.
—–
8) So, Capcom’s going to be at San Diego Comic Con, and holding a MegaMan Battle Network 6 tournament on top of that. Plus, they’ll have playable demos of unreleased games, like the next Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright… maybe Mega Man ZX will be there?
—–
9) Wow, it’d be something else to be taught by this guy.
—–
10) Huh, so Sony pulled the rumble from PS1 controllers.
—–
11) So while Microsoft is still fighting with backwards-compatibility, Sony is taking no chances. MegaMan Legends and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night thank you, Sony.
—–
—–
13) 2old2play: the website for gamers over 25 *raises hand* has a neat piece up about the masters of Sou-Setsu-Ken, Billy and Jimmy Lee.
Ah, good times. I still need to try and find that God-awful movie on the cheap so I can actually see it(only seen the end before WWE Raw came on once). They should put the cartoon on DVD, too.
I DO own the Marvel comics, at least!
Still gotta get the DVD of Super Mario Bros. the movie, too.
—–
14) Wow, remember that old stop-motion Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special from 1964? Well, turns out that the puppets are going to be at the San Diego Comic-Con and Wizard World Chicago. That’d be neat to see, just as a point of interest.

2) 1UP takes a look at pirate-themed games, and even has a piece on Misadventures of Tron Bonne, which just makes up for the sacrilege that is the lack of Wario Land.
—–
3) If you’re going to see Pirates of the Caribbean, you should read this first. Ditto for X-Men: The Last Stand(that even still in theaters?) and Cars.
IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
—–
4) IGN looks at Wii Sports: Walking the Line: The truth. The Possibility. The danger.
“Sure the system would be great at under $200 bucks, but throw in another controller (like we said, most games are multiplayer thus far) along with Wii Sports and you’ve got yourself an amazingly strong core system. Include the Zapper and Classic controllers into the mix and you’ve got a $250 package that no gamer could resist, period.”
HEY, GET YOUR OWN IDEAS, YOU FUCKING DOUCHEBAGS!
—–
5) NOA_Andy gets Punk’d… er, Pink’d.
Hey, Kirby’s cool in my book. COME PINK ME!!!

6) GameDaily breaks it down by looking at 360 vs. PS3 vs. Wii.

7) Nintendo & Sony – Leaders & Followers.
Someone finally put it into good words. This is the sort of thing we’re talking about when some of us say that Sony’s copying Nintendo, and Nintendo is innovating. We’re not trying to say Nintendo invented anything, never were(save for perhaps some of the more ignorant among us). Read on for the full scoop.
—–
8) RacketBoy.com has made a cool treat that I sure as hell enjoyed. Behold! The first issue of Nintendo Power, in .pdf format!
Ah, the memories. I still have my first issue tucked away somewhere… it’s nice to be able to enjoy it again without having to dig it up and risk it turning to dust in my hands. Check out the cool Super Mario 2 and Zelda art.
I remember that cover so well. I didn’t know anything about Super Mario 2 when I first saw it, and thought Wart was supposed to be the Mushroom King or something(y’know, ’cause of the crown and robe). I don’t think I’d even seen the Princess by that point to be able to think “hey, that wouldn’t be right…”
X-Entertainment reviewed it awhile back, too.
—–
9) Slashdot linked to this little piece, examining what else $600 for a PS3 could do for you.
“When Sony announced the price of the PS3 many people were left dumbfounded at how expensive it was going to be. Microsoft joked that people would get the Xbox360 and the Wii instead. Brittlefish has taken this a step further and put together a list of some other gaming ‘bundles’ that you could buy instead of just getting one PS3. You might be surprised at what you can get for that kind of money.”
—–
10) Also on Slashdot, Edge columnist Jeff Minter writes about Sony’s arrogance.
On a related note, I was reading over an interview Next Generation magazine had with Ken Kutaragi back in the PS1 days, and man, he seemed different.
I liked their marketing better then, too.
—–
11) Ctrl+Alt+Del takes a look at Sony’s PSP ad campaign abroad, and why the whole thing really is kind of silly.
—–
12) I’m no big Final Fantasy mark, but it makes for some interesting reading. Such as the potential for e-mail in Final Fantasy III for the DS.
—–
13) Oh, about that Nintendo Power thing? SEGA had one too, remember? SEGA Visions? As Kotaku informs, Racketboy has an early one of that, too.
Me? I might have it somewhere, I don’t remember. I got a bunch off a guy in high school.
PSM #1 is available, too, from back when they were more fun to read.
—–
14) I wonder what would happen if someone did this IRL?
Probably nothing good.
—–
15) On the one hand, I wish I’d seen this sooner. On the other hand, I wish I knew what it looked like, as I already have a standee, and if it’s the same one, then no big.
—–
16) scans_daily had a neat post which linked to a funny as Hell Flash video of the Fantastic 4, by that guy who does those other floating-hand Marvel toons.

Friday, July 7th, 2006—–
2) The end of “RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER?”
—–
3) Lotta talk about Nintendo releasing the Wii in September. While it may still happen, here’s the real deal.
So late-September is a maybe, October seems possible, but it’ll probably be out before November is done, probably before PS3, but… never know.
—–
4) Miyamoto discusses game development, then and now.
—–
5) Analysis says that Wii is bringing gaming full-circle.
“Now comes Nintendo. Instead of entering the market with a joystick controller, bland looking console…”
Oh, come on, how can anyone NOT love the faux woodgrain finish on the Atari?
—–
6) Hey, remember when Star Fox 64 introduced us to the packed-in Nintendo Rumble Pak(followed by the Dual Shock, whatever Dreamcast’s was called, the XBox, etc.)? Looks like they’re out to do it again with Star Fox Command on the DS, though it doesn’t say if it comes with the pack or not; they sort of make it sound like it’s for people who already own it. I think it came with Metroid Prime Pinball or something, didn’t it?
Hey, Nintendo. MPP is a great game and all, I’m sure, but I’m not interested in getting it just for the rumble pak. Can you pack it in with this one, too?
—–
7) Ah, the evergreen issue of XBox 360 backwards compatibility. Here’s yet another Q&A breaking it down for you.
If you don’t have time, let me break out the food-related metaphors that are becoming synonymous with gamespeak. Say you’ve got a box(360) that you need to fit a watermelon(Call of Duty or some shit) into, because that’s what the people want in their box. So you cut a hole into the box to fit the watermelon into. Well, as it happens, lemons(Barbie’s Horsefucking Adventures or whatever) fit through the hole too, and since the lemons are there anyway, and you aren’t getting anything from them, you stuff them in through the hole with the watermelon as well, and send it off to whoever’s buying into this mess in the first place. So they’re not only getting the watermelon they wanted in the first place, but a bunch of lemons as well, just because they can.
Make sense?
—–
8) God, don’t these people have a flood to attend to or something?
—–
9) When Mike Judge meets Penny Arcade?
—–
10) EA kicks ass in burger-eating contest. I don’t really care about that so much, but I think it’s funny as hell the way GameSpot integrated it in with their Burgertime info.
Man, we need a sequel to that one.
—–
11) You know you want it, and you’re a lying, soulless piece of crap if you say otherwise.
—–
12) Sonic the Hedgehog for 360 and PS3, November 17th.
“A representative for Sonic assured us that the team at SEGA has made lots of improvements from what we saw at E3 and that they have more surprises in store.”
Can I get a “w00t?”
—–
13) Oh my dearest good God, I hope this is true.
—–
14) I always wondered where that picture came from. Oh yeah, and there’s a piece about the potential DS/Wii connectivity has that GBA/GCN couldn’t live up to.
—–
15) New Rockman ZX screens and movies.
—–
16) Those Sony PSP White ads? The ones in the Netherlands? California Assemblyman Leland Yee is protesting it.
“”The latest Sony ad conjures up bad memories of when stereotypical and offensive images of people of color were accepted means of selling a product. Sony should immediately apologize and discontinue these archaic, advertising tactics.”
Anyone here from the Netherlands? Do you have bad memories and such of this?
“I am deeply disappointed in Sony’s senseless decision to publish this racially-charged advertisement. I can’t begin to determine Sony’s motivation but I believe this marketing strategy is unnecessary and is clearly offensive to many in our community.”
I bet this is how wars start.
—–
17) Come see the darker side of Wii. Clearly, one’s mileage may vary.
“Shortly after that I started thinking about the setup of my living room. It’s not at all cramped, but there isn’t exactly a lot of room for people to be running around while playing Wii Sports: Tennis.”
Just want to say, much of what I’ve read and heard implies the player doesn’t need to worry about running around, just racket control.
—–
18) Why the PlayStation 3 is a bargain deal.
While a decent argument is presented, in that if $500=gaming, $600=more, I still think even $500 is a bit much.
—–
19) Link in Mario Land? I WANT TO PLAY THIS.
Anyone know where I can get it? Preferably without further corruption of my computer?
—–
20) Pity that Nintendo didn’t sell the DS Phat like this.
—–
21) Despite some horrible Hulk-o-vision videos, onNintendo has some neat hands-on previews of Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and two I’m really eager to try, Project H.A.M.M.E.R. and Excite Truck.
—–
22) Kotaku takes a look at a Japanese Rockman.EXE-version of a German board game called “Settlers of Catan.” Gallery included.
—–
23) REAL men don’t need a Zapper to hunt ducks.
Also, it should be noted, it doesn’t matter how much damage your flashy supermove does… IF YOU CAN’T HIT THE FUCKING TARGET!

25) o/~ Don’t make a monkey out of meeeeeeeee… o/~

26) Ooooooh, classic DX figures, I want.
—–
27) I love Blade’s arsenal. I’ll have to get some, someday.
—–
28) This new indy comic, Sidescrollers, really speaks to me. I might have to look into getting a copy.

3) Sam Kennedy thinks it’s too early to tell how the Wii may shape up. There are things to consider, but I think it’ll do just fine for reasons he covers.

“The most important thing is not to be distracted by all the beautiful images in the surroundings – keep yourself pure!”
See? I bet at least one of you is going to have some fun with that line alone.

6) Hmm, Nintendo is planning a new mech title for the DS, titled Chousouju Mecha MG.
Sounds kind of Gundam-esque, but perhaps without the angst?
—–
…actually, no idea what it could be. But that’s about the only one other than a Powered Up sequel that would really grab me.
