No, I Won’t Really Sing It For You. Unless You Pay Me.

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Holy mother of crap, what a slow news day. Just as well, I suppose, it’s not like nothing else happened yesterday, but more on that later…

1) o/~ If only all games could be like the Wii,
If only all games could be region-free,
What a wonderful world this would be…
o/~

Ok, so it’s not confirmed, but it’s a nice thought.

—–

2) Brothers In Arms for Wii? I sure hope so, maybe then I can get one into my parents’ house.

—–

3) Today is the last day for Camp Hyrule registration. To learn more about Camp Hyrule, check out the Wikipedia page.

Guess I ought to hurry my ass up and sign.

—–

4) I’m happy to see that there’s finally an English version, now we just need it with more characters…

—–

5) WHATCHA GONNA DO, BROTHER, WHEN POKEMANIA RUNS WILD ON YOU?!

Now I’m dying for some sort of mix of the original Pokemon toon theme from the US show, and “Real American.”

—–

6) Star Fox Command in ShakeyVision.

I forget, is this one going to be on WiFi? I might be able to dig some WiFi dogfights, if it runs better than Mario Kart DS.

Or maybe squad-fighting. You and some buds against the armies of… Andross? Who the hell’s behind this, anyway?

That reminds me, WTF didn’t Mario Kart DS have WiFi Battle Mode?

—–

7) This day in gaming history… ROBOTS! Two of the greatest, no less.

Someday, I’ll own my very own ROB. Even if I barely play the games, he’d just look cool as hell, acting like a futuristic sentinel overlooking the game area of my living room…

—–

8) Classics Jetfire, I so love you. Please come home with me, and bring all your little friends, too, so we can play.

…I so mean that in the most hetero way possible. But I still mean it.

—–

9) Working Designs, wise fwom youw gwave!

And I love the whole concept behind the new name/logo, too.

Is Anyone Really Planning To Buy #1?

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

1) Brazen marketing tactics by video game companies never cease to amaze me.

—–

2) Waitasecond… you’re telling me that the PSP has hits?

—–

3) Does the answer to the Wii’s launch lie within?

—–

4) A look into the death and rebirth of the coin-op industry.

—–

5) New Custom Robo Arena screens. I hope this supports WiFi, I got to play a little of the original, and it was a fun piece.

—–

6) Bitchin’, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada is going to appear on The Colbert Report on Thursday night.

—–

7) TMNT video interviews from Comic-Con. Have to watch these later.

—–

8) A look at a few of the Animal Crossing Wild World Mario-themed goodies which NINTENDO/TOYS R US HAS SOUGHT TO DENY ME.

More pics.

—–

9) You can never have too much Phoenix Wright.

—–

10) Breaking Them In: Games for video game virgins.

—–

11) …wow. Monopoly is ditching cash for credit.

—–

12) Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

—–

13) Give me a break…

—–

14) Neat video, 15 years of Sonic in 5 minutes. Starts a bit rough with the Genesis games, but picks up more with Sonic CD and Jam.

I’d never seen the 3-D portions of Jam before, so that was a cool treat, and makes me yearn a bit for something a little more like that.

Funny that they showed no gameplay from Sonic CD, and ignored a number of titles(such as Knuckles Chaotix) entirely.

—–

15) Wow, G4 fails.

Also: snap.

—–

16) Interview with the Nintendo 64 Kid Teen.

—–

17) Heeeeeey, that’s not Lucas wearing the Power Glove!

No bonus material? Bad Hollywood! Bad!

—–

18) Similar to Next-Gen’s feature about the ten best year’s in gaming, Games Radar has done something similar, albeit more from a gamer’s POV.

—–

19) This reminds me… I need a new watch.

—–

20) Awesome TransFormers deal… except I don’t have a CostCo membership, and I’d rather have Galaxy Force Optimus Prime, rather than the original(though I’d gladly take either…).

Fig Newstons

1) So the DS browser is out in Japan. I’m curious as to the price.

Whereas I was before unconcerned about the idea of having one of these, meeting with my brother-in-law and his fiance at a pub Friday night to celebrate [info]woekitten‘s birthday changed it a little bit when he pulled out some portable device to check some stuff we were conversing about.

—–

2) Fuck, no wonder Bill cheated on her. God, like this stuff isn’t expensive enough? What a bitch.

—–

3) WWE Smackdown for the PS3… cancelled? Damn… I wonder if they’re playing wait-and-see on this whole thing… that could be bad for Sony if others follow.

—–

4) “Smithers, there’s a rocket in my pocket!” “You don’t have to tell ME, sir.”

—–

5) Halo… from 360 to 12… 12 times a year, that is.

* Yeah, yeah, so it’s not technically on 360, YET…

—–

6) “Dear Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo… t*ts or gtfo.”

That’s probably how 4chan would say it. QJ.net has a bit more tact than that in their version, though.

—–

7) Rampage on DS and Wii? Color me interested. Especially if we can get some WiFi bustin’ up in this here ‘hood.

—–

8) Video games responsible for decline in National Parks? Come now, can’t we all just get along? Tell you what, add some WiFi out there, and everyone wins!

—–

9) DOA4 demo on Live? AFTER the release? I can dig that. Be neat if this trend continues…

…of course, BEFORE is better, but you know…

—–

10) “Wow, this is heavy, Doc.” The “what can one life change?” thing is always neat, but this… interesting…

—–

11) Another Superman movie in 2009?

—–

12) OMG, AMD buys out ATI? WTF, lol!

…I don’t really care, I just couldn’t resist.

—–

13) New DC animated. Better than nothing, but not what I was hoping.

—–

14) Huh, I didn’t know that there was bad blood between LucasArts and Nintendo to begin with. That just makes this even better news. So not only might we have WiiSabers, but maybe a little Ind-Wii-ana Jones “Wii-p” action as well.

—–

15) Part 2 of “My 24 Hours With G4TV, Or, How I Learned To Stop Complaining And Start Bitching.”

(Psst, it’s YO Joe, not “GO” Joe. :P )

I sorta like Kristen Holt, fake or no. Wish I still had something that could record Cinematech. Damn VCR…

—–

16) Cats watching video games, is there anything more charming?

On a related note, it seems Dante has some interest in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. I love being able to do things as a family. :)

—–

17) An oldschool video game jokebook? Sold!

—–

18) Ah, the art of the pinball machine. While never terribly good at it, there’s just a certain charm to those mammoth machines that isn’t easily recaptured in the home, or in adaptations like Metroid Prime.

This one remains a favorite, I wish I’d won one when I had the chance in that Player’s Poll contest way-back when.

Oh well, at least I have the backpiece…

—–

19) “In Soviet Russia, YOU EAT PAC-MAN!!!

…at least, I THINK that’s Pac-man

—–

20) *sobs* I think I might actually ENJOY this!

Maybe I’m feeding off the will to live drained from others…

I also have a really bad Joker joke book around somewhere, too. Heh, does he ever get Batman good in that… heh heh heh…

—–

21) Dead Rising t-shirt.

…is that a rough approximation of a Servbot head I see on the top right? Or am I just imagining it?

—–

22) I still have this, somewhere.

—–

23) Soundwave reissue? Rawk.

#8: He Really Does Have “The Touch”

Friday, July 21st, 2006

Things feel amazingly slow today for having SDCC kick off and all…

1) Miyamoto discusses Wii with Nintendo Dream, via IGN.

Miyamoto first spoke about the origins of the system. “It was very important to have it become ‘something that would be best to have there,’” he said, speaking of Nintendo’s desire to make the Wii an attractive machine for households. Miyamoto feels that game machines had the status of a desirable household item at one point, but they lost it. The change happened when games “lost their fundamental nature as pure entertainment.”

One of the more interesting Wii pieces to come along since E3.

—–

2) Star Fox Command Japanese TV spot at GameTrailers.

—–

3) SEGA says Wii third parties should shape up.

“Third parties should work harder to get on board with Nintendo’s Wii, adding that there’s no excuse for missing the boat.”

—–

4) Peter Molyneux talks nice about Nintendo, disses Sony.

“…the genius of what they did was realize that consumers don’t give an arse about how many bits and bobs and flips and flops and that malarkey consoles have. When we were at 32-bit and 64-bit, it was fine, but how many bits do we have now? What they care about is that they’re going to get something that they haven’t seen before. What they have done, brilliantly, is to say: ‘Right, we’re going to revolutionize not the box but what you hold,’ and they’ve done that very well. I think Sony jumping on that bandwagon, quite blatantly, and not coming up with such a sexy message, is poor. I’ve played with the Wii and I still think it’s a challenging name. You do get used to it, and they’ve made it unique. But I’m waiting for the Nintendo Poo and then they’d have the set.”

—–

5) The Game Rag watches 21 hours of G4 so you don’t have to.

Results pending.

—–

6) Well, hot damn! I got linked on Kotaku!

Pity they didn’t say my name… ah well.

—–

7) Wow, first rice, and now Super Mario curry.

I want the little robot thing.

—–

8) Awesome! Peter Cullen is going to play Optimus Prime in the new movie!

Congratulations, Mr. Cullen!

—–

9) TransFormers KISS: You may proceed to be freaked out.

Your Daily Dose of Hubris and More! Inside…

Friday, July 21st, 2006

1) Looks like if your DS is cracked(a 0.02% minority incident, it seems), Nintendo’s got your back.

—–

2) So, it seems that maybe PS3 production may have begun. Not that it’s anyone’s business, of course.

—–

3) Newgrounds.com seems to be doing well for itself, as Alien Homminid is headed for XBox 360 Live Arcade, as well as something called Castle Crashers.

—–

4) Ouch, looks like the UK might be in for a bit of sticker shock for pre-ordering PS3s, as Sony tries to keep the “eBay phenomenon” from making an encore. Sounds good, but will it work?

—–

5) Ok, fine, so UMD isn’t dead, it’s just “niche” now.

What the hell ever.

—–

6) Meanwhile, Sony patents something fairly similar to the Wii controller, and it’s not the PS3 controller.

—–

7) Japan not doing a 360: a look at Microsoft’s war abroad.

Sort of answers the question, “what if war was declared, and no one showed up?” At this point, it seems even the sole participant can’t win. Kinda sad.

—–

8) I call dibs on Dexter.

Or maybe Johnny Bravo.

Wait, you’re supposed to make your own characters. So I’ll do what I’d have done when I was 15…

Johnny Bravo with Samurai Jack’s sword, and Dexter’s brains and lab.

Yes…

—–

9) Sony unveils Blu-Ray DVD burner; poverty-stricken gamers who can’t afford any games for their PS3 unveil foam of the mouth as potential is realized.

—–

10) I don’t tend to think much of rumors, but hell, this list of Nintendo ones was too good to pass on.

—–

11) The Tick vs. Season One comes to DVD!!!

SPOON!!!

—–

12) More details on the bitchin’ Animal Crossing: Wild World swag, MARIO-themed swag, available at TRU this weekend.

This had BETTER be available in Canada, else I shall be PISSED.

—–

13) Over on IGN, Matt speaks up about how they’ll have to approach reviewing Wii games.

—–

14) From Sunshine to Galaxy: a look back and ahead at Mario’s adventures.

And let me just say, as much as I could really not have given a crap about the Piantas in Sunshine, I’m loving this whole “Pianta Syndicate” turf war in Paper Mario.

—–

15) Slashdot has a neat piece, “How America Changed The Mario Brothers.”

An interesting perspective, for sure.

Consider also that Nintendo of America was responsible for the name Mario, as well, and that Mario’s traditional look/color scheme as we know it today was established in our SMB2.

—–

16) Ken Kutaragi is going to deliver a keynote address at the Tokyo Game Show titled “The next-generation as created by the PlayStation 3.”

Cue tumbleweeds rolling across a ghost-town backdrop.

I kid, though.

—–

17) I always wondered how The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would have been in 2-D. After some waiting on the project, I may just get to find out. w00t!

—–

18) Castlevania cosplay gone horribly, horribly wrong.

Or terrifically right, depending on you. And if you’re of the latter, stay the hell away from me.

—–

19) 5 years and 2 days ago, Capcom shamed us all.

—–

20) Nick Arcade was just never as cool as it should’ve been.

—–

21) I love reverse psychology.

—–

22) IDW evidently had a panel at SDCC’06 about TransFormers, and here are the results of that.

Spotlight looks like a good roster to me…

Nightbeat! :D

—–

23) Behind the Scenes with PSM.

—–

24) SDCC video panel for the 20th Anniversary of TransFormers The Movie on DVD.

I’m sort of hoping they might be able to restore some of the “original” stuff, or patch up glitches(like Magnus putting the Matrix into his chest… twice).

I’d also like to know what those “Matrix of Knowledge” bits said that was so funny…

—–

25) New Titanium TransFormers… Scourge looks cool. And Rodimus Prime certainly looks… interesting.

—–

26) Masterpiece Prime is being re-released, and with a trailer at that. I want.

Friday, July 21st, 2006

For those who haven’t seen it, the trailer for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

And to sweeten the deal, a behind-the-scenes of Ubisoft’s kick-ass looking game based on the movie.

Oh shell yeah. XD

“God of War, Digivolve Into… TETRIS?! WTF?”

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

1) So the guy who made God of War has lost interest in storytelling.

—–

2) Evidently, Nintendo hates us, and conveniently, there are 10 reasons why.

As I’m sure no one would be surprised by, I’m a Nintendo fan, and I do have a few issues with the list.

Nintendo aren’t saints, there’s definitely some issues from the past, “sins of the father,” one might say. I’m not trying to polish a halo around Nintendo’s collective head, just issue some debate to the points made above.

1: The Wii name. Like it, love it, or hate it, it’s here to stay, Nintendo’s stated their reasons, and part of it being that “Wii” is pretty much universal, something “Revolution” would not have been. That said, let’s hear a better name for it than either “Wii” or “Revolution.”

2) I’ve never had to blow the dust out of a game cartridge since the NES. Ever.

Additionally, while I don’t think Nintendo made the right decision going with cartridges, I don’t think they made the wrong one, either. Prior to N64′s development, SEGA CD, CDi, Jaguar, TurboCD, and 3DO were your systems showing off what CDs could do, and it just wasn’t as grand as it would later become, with the PlayStation. After Sony showed “this shit can kick some ass,” well, it became another ballgame, but I imagine to change things on N64 could have caused further delays and more turmoil.

Should N64 have used CDs? Probably, yeah(though lack of load times was generally appreciated). For sure.

Was it wrong of them to go with cartridges? Not exactly, they still made a good showing with carts.

3) A tragedy, I admit, but it did have a few neat games that I think would be neat to see reformated for Wii download play as a standard game. I hear Wario Land for the VB is one of the series’ best.

4) Yeah, that is a bit of overkill. While I’ve heard that none are really terrible in their own individual right, it sounds like many of them can be more redundant than Mega Man sequelization if you’ve played others.

5) Not even going to justify this by debating against it.

6) Can’t argue this one.

7) Too far? Give me a break, if Nintendo didn’t do it, everyone else would have.

8) GameCube didn’t really fail, it just didn’t have a dominant market share. Big difference between not having a larger market share and not turning a profit, which is the main issue here.

As for the retro stuff? Yeah, the games were a bit of a rip, especially compared to Japan, but damn, that limited-edition GBA SP was hot, and I’m still pissed that I can’t own one of those, while “limited-edition” platinum GameCubes are in abundance…

9) These are just about the only sports games I play. Keep ‘em coming, says I. If I want “real” baseball or tennis, I’ll go outside.

10) Poor baby. :( This is why I seldom tread into rumors unless they hold a particular interest, and clearly note that it is a rumor.

Random story: Nintendo also used to have a cab company, if memory serves, among other businesses.

—–

3) Evidently, the country of Japan decided to get a second job.

—–

4) Kudos to Sony, if this doesn’t involve spyware and the like.

—–

5) Plenty of things annoy me about the Mega Man compilations. One thing would be that they seem to be the ONLY ones Capcom will put on Nintendo, not counting that one little bundle of love coming for the GBA, while collections like this and others(Street Fighter) stick to PS2, PSP, and maybe XBox.

—–

6) South Park‘s Matt Stone and Trey Parker chat with IGN about Tom Cruise, Family Guy, and constantly creating controversy.

Q: You guys have been on for ten years. You have plush toys. You have collectibles. You’ve got wireless games. Apparently you even have a travel sweepstakes. Are you guys afraid of becoming respectable?

Trey Parker: No. Look at the s**t we do, you know?

Matt Stone: It was, like, our worst nightmare was winning the Emmy. We were just like, “Oh, God.” That was our nightmare.

Trey Parker: It really was. Winning the Emmy really was like, you’re kind of the punk rock kid at school, and suddenly you get Student of the Month. And you’re like, “This isn’t cool.”

Good stuff.

—–

7) Following in the footsteps of their Why Game Developers Hate Game Reviewers piece, GameDaily now has Why Video Game Journalism Sucks and Why Gamers Hate Certain Companies.

Man, lotta hate going around…

—–

8) Joystiq and Gameworld take a look at if the PSP’s number is up.

—–

9) Ouch, guess Nintendo isn’t all sweetness and nice on repairs after all, though I imagine if enough of a case is made, they may change their stance.

Not that they’re all bad on it. Either way, fifty bucks, not too bad. Sort of says “be more careful” without totally collapsing your gonads for negligence or accidents.

It is business, after all.

I do wonder if people are bending the top portion back too far, though.

—–

10) Awesome, a lost Penny Arcade comic.

—–

11) More Animal Crossing The Movie stuff.

—–

12) GAMEPRO TV!!!!!!

—–

13) Super Mario War: the Mushroom Kingdom Deathmatch.

—–

14) Yet more Gaming is Art stuff.

Man, I love this stuff. Especially that first Mario one…

—–

15) Rentals: The Next Generation

—–

16) Cheapass Gamer notes a $9.82 sale at Wal-mart.com. Get ‘em fast!

—–

17) [info]bpmomega has alerted me to something I missed at Nintendo.com: A free Animal Crossing: Wild World virtual gift at Toys R Us!

But, is it available in Canada?

—–

18) Oh, sweet… IDW is making a new adaptation of the original TransFormers The Movie. And Don’s doing the art! This is going to be great.

Sucks To Be You, I Guess.

Monday, July 17th, 2006
1) Well, it sounds like The Halo Graphic Novel is good….though maybe the movie script wasn’t.

—–

2) Wow, sucks to be in Germany, I guess, at least as far as Dead Rising is concerned.

I know I’d hate to be deprived of putting Servbot heads on zombies because someone I never even met said I couldn’t handle it.

Speaking of which, check out that clown’s buttons. Servbot!!! :D

—–

3) Wow, sucks to be in the UK, I guess, at least as far as the Wii is concerned.

—–

4) o/~ It’s the end of gam-ing as we know it, and I feel fiiiiiiine… o/~

Or not. I’m sorta conflicted, really.

—–

5) Sony declares UMD movies dead; consumers declare they thought they already were.

—–

6) Gamespot cracks down on cracking DS Lite reports that have left Sony fans cracking up.

—–

7) Son of a bitch, I wanna meet Mario!

—–

8) Kickass, Richard Donner(guy who produced the first movie-and-a-half of Superman, upon which Superman Returns carries on from) is going to be writing some of the upcoming comics. Nice.

—–

9) Whenever you’re in trouble and are filled with doubt, stop, take a deep breath, and ask “What would GameSpy do?”

—–

10) Outlook on Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

—–

11) Hmm, an animated Dragonlance movie, eh>

—–

12) Now this is a classy rug…

15) Kewl, Mario’s Super Maze. Mommy, I wanna goooooooooo…!

—–

16) That there is a right-awesome Mega Man-themed case mod.

17) ANOTHER new Wii button?!

—–

18) Pre-Beast Wars Megatron is looking oh-so good, yesss…

But I’m sort of torn on the re-release of 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime. A blue gun? No…

Time to Jet

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

So, www.toonamijetstream.com is up, a bit early even, if memory serves.

And it’s a fucking US-only site. How fucking conceited can you get?

They don’t have MegaMan NT Warrior on there, yet, but I’d like to be able to have the option of seeing it if they do. Hey, I’m still an American, dammit, and Teletoon fucked everyone north of the border over here with their handling of the show.

Is there a way to circumvent shit like this?

LBD “Nytetrayn”

20 items today.

Friday, July 14th, 2006

1) This is kind of cool; I knew about the Moogle, but the others? It’s like Mario vs. 8-Bit Theater now. Or such would be my hope. This is sort of like what I’d hoped for in terms of the notion of Final Fantasy characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl when it was suggested, though the idea of Cloud and Sephiroth, two characters credited with helping put PlayStation on the map, at least RPG-wise… that appeals to me, in a similar way as Snake does.

—–

2) Peter Moore likes Sonic Wild Fire. w00t.

—–

3) Sony? Arrogant? Sony Computer Entertainment boss Phil Harrison doesn’t think so, he just thinks a lot of things get taken out of context.

Maybe he’s right, since they’re still #1 with consumers.

—–

4) Meanwhile, Microsoft isn’t doing so hot in Japan. Hey, MS, here’s an idea: get someone who DOESN’T have a name like “Darren Huston” to run things there, and maybe they’ll open up a little more.

—–

5) Someone outside the general gaming community takes a look at why Wii will win.

—–

6) …it’s YOUR fault the PS3 is the way it is.

…funny, though, that the topic of BluRay isn’t really brought up there… isn’t that the big thing driving up the price?

—–

7) PS3/Wii poll comparisons.

Now, as you can clearly see here in Exhibit A, the Wii contingent is formed in the shape of Pac-man, about to devour his competition. Now, I ask you, can there BE any clearer proof that Nintendo is going to kick serious ass in the coming generation? I think not.

Thank you.

—–

8) Fuck, PS3 problems seemed far more interesting before they started coming EVERY DAMN WEEK.

—–

9) IGN is out to unlock the secrets of the Wii controllers.

Hmm, seems like there’d be SOME analog button on there…

“Developers tell IGN Wii that they are expecting to get classic Wii controllers in early September, which suggests that Nintendo is serious about providing this third input alternative for Virtual Console endeavors.”

Hot dog.

—–

10) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now known as… TMNT?

I think it’s funny that it seems so strange…

—–

11) Sounds like theaters have a special lenticular Spider-man 3 poster

—–

12) Knowing full and well that I am not a sports fan… this is still pretty damn cool.

—–

13) A few new Super Paper Mario screens, with some Bowser love. :D

—–

14) Next-Gen looks at three great design evils, according to Peter Molyneux, Jonathan Smith and Simon Byron.

I’m sort of with Simon, to a degree.

—–

15) Speechless…

—–

16) Joystiq brings us some game ideas worth stealing.

I like the Dragon Quest VIII one, about where you can wander for hours and still get something out of it.

—–

17) Kid buys porn UMD instead of PSP game; legality ensues.

…I didn’t even know they made porn UMDs here in the US.

—–

18) …Nice tattoo.

—–

19) Mmmmmm, Papa John’s pizza

—–

20) Press The Buttons and a comment from Slashdot add to yesterday’s Next-Gen story regarding gaming mascots and Sonic.
