The Daily ‘Shroom
- IGN looks at what’s inside the PS3 package, and gives some pricing. Sounds like the hardware is rolling as we speak.
As a treat, the first 500,000 PlayStation 3 units shipped will include the Blu-ray edition of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The bonus puts the Blu-ray edition of the Will Ferrell film in customers’ hands ahead of its retail release on December 12.
- Good news: the Wii will have component cables.
Bad news: they’re only available online.
PS3 is in a similar boat, but theirs might be in stores, at least.
- Also bad news, at least for Halo fans. Joystiq reports that both Fox and Universal have pulled out of the agreement, leaving the movie without a studio.
- And here people call Nintendo the innovators.
I don’t think anyone was expecting Sony to produce a disposable controller, though that might account for the reports of how cheap it feels.
…of course, for $50?
I don’t think so, Ken.

(4) They’re just saying that you can’t replace the battery if it expires. But that wouldn’t happen in years I assume.
This has nothing to do with why the PS3 controller feels cheap. The PS3 controller just feels cheaps because it sucks.

2. No big news there! When I went hunting for component cables for the household’s main systems (my Cube and PS2, and a friend’s Xbox original), the only ones I could find in stores was the Xbox’s. The others I had to order online. But this was years after the systems’ launches, and by that time the GameCube hardware itself had the compatibility with the cables removed, so I’m not sure how my search would’ve gone if I’d done it earlier. But this is no big surprise…
I mean, Nintendo sold Electroplankton only online. And the Wifi USB Adapter was mostly available only online. I’m not really sure why they do this, but it seems the people who want this stuff know where to find it. I see no big deal about having to order the cables online!
4. Is it still considered innovation if nobody actually wants it? Well, on the plus side, this makes me appreciate the value of all my other controllers just that much more.
I guess we’d need to do some field testing, but according to the article, they say the battery will degrade after about a year. In my experience, that doesn’t seem like an unreasonable estimate. But let’s see… Assuming you did buy two new controllers every year, that’d be an extra $100 a year. So five or six years after you got your PS3, you would’ve spent enough to buy another PS3.
I mean, sure, you can still use them as wired controllers, I guess… But going back and playing my GameCube and PS2 with wired controllers, I’ve decided they really suck. I never thought I would get that spoiled, but that’s how it is! It’s a dang nuisance.
