The Daily ‘Shroom

Coming a bit late, but it’s been a busy day. Let’s see what we got…

  1. The Allspark brings a bit of word from Seibertron of some scene previews from the new TransFormers movie.
  2. Nintendo, along with HAL Labs, continue to try and improve our lives and expand the gaming market at the same time by planning for a release of a common sense trainer.

I have to admit, I’m rather curious about that one.

  3. Looks like SEGA is undetered by Sony’s PS3 problems as they’ve released a new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog.

Interesting how they mix the realistic look with Sonic’s slight humorous touch.

  4. IBM confirms that not only is their Broadway chip for the Wii ready to go, but has been for several weeks.

    Point: Nintendo.

On the other hand, Sony’s advantage is that they’ll no doubt be able to claim that they sold out in record time.

  5. Remember when Capcom made games based on the likes of DucktalesRescue RangersMarvel Super HeroesYo, Noid!

…well, maybe not that last one.

Anyway, Next-Gen reports that Capcom might be looking to get back into the licensed-game biz.

When asked if she could reveal any licenses she’s eyeing for Capcom, [licensing head Germaine Gioia] replied, “Hell no.”

Gotta love the bluntness of that.

  6. From onNintendo comes an interesting bit regarding an IGN toadie trying to redefine what “hardcore” gaming is.

“?Hell, even its best games, like Mario, Zelda and Metroid, wouldn?t really qualify as hardcore.? ? Juan Castro (according to codenamerevolution.com)”

Well, if “hardcore” to this guy is Madden, Grand Theft Auto, and Gran Turismo, he can keep “hardcore” while I just go for “fun.”

  7. Slashdot has some reports that despite reports yesterday, Sony is still aiming for 1 million units in the US of A by year’s end.

So I guess ultimately, even if they don’t have a grand launch, they still may have a good Christmas season.

    (6) — So we know Juan Castro doesn’t think Nintendo games are ‘hardcore’. Whatever that means. What /does/ that mean anyway?? The author of that rant, Megaton, doesn’t care, he’s just flaming an Wii hater without really presenting a sensible argument. He’s just riling up Wii fans. He even compares Juan Castro to Fidel Castro, which is just great.

I’m gonna play devil’s advocate and say that in a sense, Wii is /not/ hardcore. To me it seems a lot like a novelty system. The controller seems like a step back. They purposefully made Zelda harder to play just to force us to use the Wiimote more. It’s been a long time since Nintendo truly made consistently great games and it doesn’t really seem like they are making a comeback as far as I can tell. If you want to play with the Wiimote, you get a Wii. Wii is for casual gamers, kids, and newbies. If I wanted to play /videogames/ and appreciate the best games out there, I would not necessarily get a Wii. After all, third party support (which creates the immense majority of the best games nowadays) for Wii is reserved and selective, and the controller and lower system capabilities may shun most games that will be available on Xbox 360 and PS3, which will leave Wii’s 3rd party lineup to a small crop of games specifically made to humor the Wiimote. There is more outside the Nintendo cradle besides Gran Turismo, Madden, and GTA.

Honestly, I think they are both jerks. (They both need a copy of the upcoming common sense trainer on DS, eh?) Juan argues on the sensationalist yet meaningless phrase of what’s “hardcore” but Megaton has this to say:

“The Wii is not a next-gen system. The Wii is a new-gen system. The PS3 is a next-old-gen system. It will attempt to bring to the market what xBox 360 already has, a year ago. Oh but yeah, we will get the privilege of paying for Sony?s Blu-Crap ? oh joy, can?t wait.”

Wait, Wii is not is a next-gen system… but a NEW-GEN SYSTEM?? Oh why didn’t you say so? I’m convinced.

    lol

I have to agree with a lot of what egg said, but I wouldn’t call the Wii controller a “step back”. What a lot of people forget (I’m not saying egg necessarily is) is that it’ll still be possible to use conventional controls on the Wii. Just as you don’t HAVE to incorporate the touch-screen feature of the DS, you don’t HAVE to incorporate the Wii controller in your games… I mean, the GameCube-looking attachment to the Wiimote did look a little awkward, but I guess we’ll have to wait to see the final product. But yeah, we have Smash Bros. Brawl at least saying they’ll use conventional controls, and I don’t expect it to be the last game to do so on the Wii…

So, at the least, we should be seeing the same sorts of games we saw on the GameCube. So I wouldn’t see that as a step back, but perhaps, not a step far forward enough? At least in terms of being “hardcore”… I mean, yeah, if the Wii controller doesn’t lure over games you’d normally see on the PS2 and 360, then the ability to use old GameCube-like controls sure isn’t going to help.

And hey… If we can have an upcoming 360 (and PC) game, Phantasy Star Universe, also made available for the PS2 depsite its technical shortcomings (of the three versions, the PS2 is the only one reported with slowdown), I don’t see why the Wii will have to be left out of future cross-platform titles. Sure, I don’t expect the Wii to get everything that graces the 360 and PS3, but I’m sure there will be many games that cross multiple platforms… Like that Marvel Alliances game.

You haven’t seen the Classic controller yet? Do a search, most sites have it. It looks pretty good, basically a SNES controller with dual analogs in the middle a la the PS2.
