17. A quick briefer on Achievement Points: When you play on the 360 (and I guess, now, on Vista), you sign in with a gamer profile, which is an identity kind of like any login you have for anything else (like your LiveJournal username, or your computer login profile, etc.). When you play a game, you can earn Achievement Points, which are basically unlocks that are worth a particular point value, and most games typically have 1000 available. The points you earn over all the games you’ve played are totalled up as your “Gamerscore” for your profile.
One thing to compare it to is this… You know the special messages you can get in Smash Bros. Melee? They include simple things like, “You’ve cleared 1-P Adventure!”, unlocks such as “Dr. Mario is now playable!”, collections of achievements like “All stages are now open!”, special conditions like “You beat Event Match 51 with no falls!”, and some huge achievements like “1,000,000 Vs. mode matches played!” Imagine the same thing, except universal to EVERY game you can play on that system as a built-in mechanic.
So basically, Achievement Points are just for fun and bragging rights. Some people think they are worthless while it’s almost like digital crack to others. But basically, if you like exploring games, seeing all they have to offer, and basically sucking as much experience from a game as possible, Achievement Points can be a fun way to show off what you’ve accomplished.
