"I would suggest that it's not the medium, but the quality of perception and expression, that determines the significance of art. But what would a cartoonist know?" -- Bill Watterson

Points of Interest – 1/12/07

  1. GameDaily has a preview of the upcoming Nintendo DS title, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Sounds intriguing, I can’t wait to try it out.

  2. Gotta admit, these are some pretty funky footwear.

But they ain’t foolin’ me, Mario’s shoes are brown.

    Nice try, though.

And yes, I would so wear those, if they were comfortable.

  3. New scan of Mario Party 8.

Instead of generic enemies being invited, I wish they’d do the characters, like say, instead of a Goomba, use Goombella.

  4. Game|Life attends the World Series of Video Games.

When I was a kid, stuff like that tourney in The Wizard and the Nintendo World Championships seemed awesome.

Getting older, stuff like the Blockbuster World Video Game Championships (which I won in my town, I might add) had a certain allure.

Now? I can’t bring myself to get too excited. Seeing what people do in Tetris and speedruns and competitions, I know I’d get the ever-holy-loving crap stomped out of me.

  5. Wii has crossed into a new (for them) method of promotion: comics.

Not bad, but call me when they get Spider-Man and Superman shilling the systems like Hostess Fruit Pies (yo, readers, that’s a Photoshop opp right there), and we’ll be talkin’ then.

  6. Upon receiving their new Wii straps, 2old2play decided to do some experimentation

Slow day, huh?

    3. I see they ditched the dots in favor of an actual path with adjacent squares. Interesting! Actually, well, I don’t know how interesting that really is. But I remember at first, I had a hard time counting spaces because I wasn’t sure if special even spots counted as a space or not. I believe the answer is “not.” I’m liking the look of the game, though! Can’t wait to see some of the mini-games. I see the tracing games may be making a comeback!

I REALLY miss those palm-bruising “rotate the analog stick” games from the first Mario Party, though. Maybe now we’ll have carpal tunnel-inducing “whirling” games for the Wii to replace them, though. Oh, and those original “Bowser” 3-on-1 games where one player was stuck in a Bowser costume… That was priceless.

    5. I think that’s pretty cool. Not totally amazing, but I like it. It gets the word out! And as for the Hostess resemblance comments in the article, I think that’s actually a good thing. It brings back that campy nostalgia feel, which is part of what Nintendo’s going for now, isn’t it? Bring back the old games with the virtual console, bring back that old “this is new!” feeling with the system itself.

I remember when Bonk’s Adventure had the same kind of two-page ad in comics. Bonk died at the end and it was ALWAYS the same. They never made other versions of that, where Bonk would actually be in a different situation (or at least die a different way), and that annoyed me a bit.

    6. Seems like a pretty decent misstep for Nintendo there, if the original straps broke with that little effort… You don’t suppose they did this intentionally just to spread the word? Like they say, there’s (almost) no such thing as bad press. Even my step-father knew about it before I even showed them the system, and he’s not the techiest guy around.
