Two stories from Examiner today, one from Toronto Video Game Examiner, the other from Nintendo Canada Examiner:

Toronto video game deals for the week of August 6th to August 12th, 2010

Report from Nintendo of Canada’s Metroid: Other M preview event

The second is a bit long, but at least it’s thorough, I feel. My concern is mostly that I’m casting the game in too negative a light, but I really did enjoy it… that is, when I got to play it. Still, I’m looking forward to its release and hope I can get it when it comes out. That said, I’m still not looking forward to seeing those beginning cut scenes again…

Edit: I’ve revised the ending of the Metroid report, as Parish’s 1UP preview has given me greater optimism.

Come See the Secret Side of Fast Food

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

I had been under the impression that, thanks to sites such as The Consumerist, “secret menus” at fast food establishments were a fairly well-known commodity… just not often spoken of.

For those unaware, the “secret menus” are usually items which the chain in question might have once carried, but no longer do… at least, that’s what you would think if you were to glance over the menu posted over the registers. Such items are typically made with fare they carry anyway, just arranged a bit differently. And since they have the materials but no promotion for it, the items become something of a “special request.”

RipTen Round-Up

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

I had thought that the Twitter digests were rounding up my Retweets as well, but that is apparently not the case. Lance is looking into it, but that means my recent retweets of the news I have posted at RipTen have not been showing up here.

Oh, did I forget to mention I’m now doing news for RipTen? It’s true; I’m still keeping options only, but it helps keep me in practice, and should be good for some extra money.

Anyway, here are the stories I’ve posted so far this week:

Reflect on the Nintendo Fun Club Today!

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Before there was Nintendo Power magazine, there was the Nintendo Fun Club newsletter. And much to my regret, that was before my time in becoming a lifelong video game hobbyist.

Indeed, I came into the world of video game magazines with the first issue of Nintendo Power, and missed the Fun Club newsletter completely. I’ve been with the magazine almost solidly since, save for a seven-month span leading into the first issue of their 2005 pre-Future revamp (volumes 187 through 193) in which I could not afford to resubscribe, as well as the period in which I rode the coattails of my wife’s subscription.

And personally, I would love to get my hands on those seven issues, as well as the Nintendo Fun Club newsletter. It’s too bad that they didn’t have eBay back when I first got on board, because I bet it would have been handy, and probably cheaper than finding them now.

Fortunately, the 1UP Retro Blog has a decent compromise for me in its latest article, The Paper Trail: Nintendo Fun Club News (Part 1). I may not have gotten to read the NFC newsletter, but at least now I can know what went on in each edition and revel in the small-press charm each of the seven issues that went to members before Nintendo upped the ante and rolled out all the news that you can use in Nintendo Power.

Maybe someday I can fill out these few holes in my collection. But for now, I’m going to read and reminisce while wondering if there is some sort of lifetime rate for subscription.
