Action and Wii-Action

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

Slashdot has this little gem:

“Gameworld Network (which is either a network of gameworlds or a gameworld of networks) has posted an epic collection of streaming E3 videos which clearly depicts each and every playable Wii game and how exactly one has to swing, wave, shake, point, wiggle and/or jostle the Wiimote in order to play.”

A brief flurry of game bits.

Red Steel tightens up controls.

Nintendo holds corporate briefing, in English(mostly) on their Japanese website. Among interesting points are Iwata’s statement that “If Wii doesn’t outsell GameCube, we’ve failed” and Miyamoto’s that “Honestly, I have not been able to use 100% of GameCube’s power yet, so I am very happy with Wii’s far superior functionality.”

Iwata also seems dissatisfied with current pricing models for games, like the guaranteed price drops after a few months.

All sorts of neat stuff discussed. But if you lack the time and/or dedication, Next Generation has a scaled-down hit list right here.

Sony says, “GTA? We don’t need no stinkin’ GTA.” Basically, he thinks that it won’t make a difference with the PS3. I’m inclined to agree.

Oh, and also, a potential 6-to-10 million unit lead for XBox 360 isn’t a big concern, either.

Y’know, what with all of us gamers looking to drop a grand on a new system.

Phoenix Wright is getting a third printing come August.

“Consider importing the UK or Japanese version,” says one retailer, since DS is region-free and the Japanese version has an English language option.

The arcade is dead, long live the Cyber Cafe.

Y’know, no matter how many times I hear this, I find myself saddened and in denial. There IS a way to revive arcades, I just know it. We just simply haven’t found it yet.

Fuck the Saturn, THIS is the SEGA machine I most want in my home.

(Really, Saturn, I didn’t mean it like that, you’ll always have a home here… if I ever get one…)

XBox 360 to loseWeight Exercise $100 off the price come Christmas? It seems to just be a rumor for now, and a UK-based one at that, but man, that’d be sweet.

A neat piece on used game stores putting the screws to you. I’m conflicted, personally.

Is it too late to laugh at the fact this used to be the guy who marched outside of Nintendo of America with a bullhorn?

Speaking of Mario, it sounds like Super Mario Galaxy may yet have a co-op mode, though specifics are vague.

Kikizo Games has a video interview with Katsuya Eguchi, the man behind Animal Crossing, including the DS and upcoming Wii versions, and other stuff.

Wowie-Zowie, Master Higgins!

GameTrailers has added some new stuff for Bomberman Act Zero, including a Japanese trailer and their own preview.

I can still somehow see this working for XBox owners who might want a more mature-themed game, but something a little simpler than much of the fare.

I’ve said before that I’d sort of like to see an update to Adventure Island that follows this sort of update, perhaps, but it seems that there might be a number of issues that would complicate that.

And people think Mega Man and Zelda have fucked-up continuity issues.

Corrupted

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, hands-on.

Sounds great. I’ve been sort of “meh” with the past three Primes, but this one has me eager to try.

Tech Banned In Classrooms?

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

So, one of Yahoo’s little story gatherings today involves today’s kids and technology, including this piece on technology in the classroom.

Now, I can understand phones not being allowed. If there’s an emergency, call the school, and have them page or get the student through administrative means. That’s basically what was done when I was growing up.

The laptop thing is a little more interesting to me, though.

See, I’ve been hearing about, and even felt when I was in school, the burden of having so many books and crap to haul around, and the damage it can do. The fact I see chiropractors here advertising to capitalize on this tells me something.

Personally, I think it’d be great if laptops replaced text and notebooks. I imagine that it could save a lot in the way of paper and trees.

The idea is maybe mass-producing a really low-end laptop, something good for maybe reading over discs or CD-ROMs, and word processing. Nothing more. Then, instead of all these textbooks year after year, there can be a sort of school-issued laptop, and the textbooks go on disc.

I imagine that would be a hell of a lot easier on kids than lugging around a 5-pound literature book, and history, and so on.

I also imagine there are a few bugs in the system there that could stand to be worked out, and of course, different people are going to have different mileage in their view of how practical it is. But as I’ve learned, not everyone’s got the same benefits, such as an easy/timely-to-reach locker to go to between classes as they have to cross the campus to make it to class in the 3 minutes 42.8 seconds that schools give you before you’re marked tardy.

Hey, Bill Gates, you’re in charge of some charitable organizations, right? Maybe this would be a good thing to put your company on…

…has anyone kept a running count of how many negative things I might’ve said about Uwe Boll?

Whuh-oh…

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

Remember all that chit-chat Kutaragi’s had about how “the PlayStation 3 is a computer?”

According to Kotaku, it seems that the UK courts disagree.

Also at Kotaku, they’ve posted an amusing little CD-i Zelda review from some guys that were from ScrewAttack.com. It was supposed to be on GameLife, but evidently GL gave SA the axe like so many Daria(y’know, those gator things from Zelda II. With the axes).

Sounds Good To Me.

IGN goes hands-on with one of Nintendo’s silent GameCube stars of E3, Super Paper Mario.

Here’s hoping this makes up a bit for the rather lacking presence of Mario on the GameCube, eh?

Burning Question

Monday, June 19th, 2006

IGN presents, The Nintendo Minute.

This week’s question: Nintendo keeps saying that Wii “will not exceed $250″ when it goes on sale. Does this mean that the console will be $250 or could it still launch for $199? Why not announce the system’s exact price point?

If you play with Wild Fire…

Monday, June 19th, 2006

Check it out, yo. Some high-definition(?) videos of Sonic Wild Fire. Careful on that second one, though, quality is scratchy as hell, kind of skipping.

Don’t expect anything new, though, other than quality, it’s the same stage as the E3 demo, but you can hear the music and voices in the teaser a little better now.

You can feel the burn in some new high-res(maybe that’s what they meant for the vids) screenshots, too.
