For once I’m glad to see a relatively positive piece regarding Sonic Next.
The real problem with 3D Sonic games is that none of them feel -definitive-. Whether it’s the gimmicks or the lack of Sonic, they seem unsatisfying. Sonic Next is that definitive release we were waiting for.
Yes, the gameplay is the same as past 3D Sonics. There is no reason to change it. Past 3D Sonics had the ideal gameplay premise all along, the problem was that they didn’t focus on it enough, or burdened it with gimmicks, or lack of polish.
Sonic Next is a glorious rendition of the same 3D Sonic formula. This glorious rendition is all the series needed. Yes, it’s “just” Sonic Adventure 3. But it’s the undoubtedly going to be the best Sonic Adventure yet, and the best 3D Sonic.
Level length is an issue, but we already know that what is there is richer than any previous game, with multiple intertwining paths.
And anyway, the early demos and the first trailer had me worried, not excited. It was devoid of character, and it felt too uptight. I for one don’t care about Super Sonic. But in the end, Sonic Next is clearly the most lively Sonic game ever, with nearly the entire cast being brought back in next-gen glory, all alongside real-like humans. In my opinion, bringing Shadow back, complete with angstmobile, shows much more creative integrity than sweeping him back under the carpet solely in reaction to critics.
