Special Edition: The Day-Wii ‘Shroom
Hoo, boy. So much went on yesterday, I decided to seperate the Wii news from the non-Wii news. Look below this and the next article for the rest.
Or just read the titles.
- GameTrailers seems to have a bevy of new Wii trailers from the conference yesterday. Let’s see what they’ve got:
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption(under “Gameplay”), Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2(“Trailer”), and Rayman: Raving Rabbids(Trailer and Trailer HD)… not bad. I love Samus’ new ship, after seeing it in action. And a Rabbid wearing Splinter Cell-style headgear wins.
- GameSpot also takes a look at how the Wii makes money immediately, as well as some developer comments on the pluses of developing for it.
- A new Red Steel preview is up, and it sounds like the game has progressed nicely since E3. Can’t wait to try it for myself, and it’ll be available at launch.
As noted before, Big Brain Academy will be making its way to the Wii, and some details are out for Pokemon Battle Revolution and Wii Sports’ Bowling, plus another look at Zelda that may put some control-fears to rest, and Metroid Prime 3, which I continue to think may be just what I need to draw me into the Metroid Prime experience.
- Wii specs are up, and DVD is out. No big. It would’ve been a cute little perk, but not worth driving the price up over, and I won’t really miss it, unless I can get the Wii to hook up my father-in-law’s TV(I couldn’t with the GameCube, I don’t know what he did to it). Then I might sort of sigh for what might have been.
- GameSpot also has some videos from the Wii event, including the conference and some hands-on video which shows off a number of titles, with developers telling you how things will respond.
- Virtual Console developers have been named.
A pretty solid lineup. At the moment, I can’t think of much more I’d want there.
- Screens aplenty at GameSpot as well, just scroll down here to see them all listed.
- Japan’s 101 games for the Wii are also listed here, including Animal Crossing and Super Paper Mario.
- Good news for importers, as first-party Wii games will not be region-coded, and if anything should happen to your Wii, you can still play your previously-purchased games on a new console.
The piece also addresses the possibility of using an external USB drive with the Wii, but it remains unclear if the more tech-able users will be able to find a way to make it work.
- One issue regarding the Wii that has come up is that of buying additional controllers, but Nintendo has already planned for that, at least in Japan:
In Japan, Nintendo will be bundling a Wiimote with Hajimete no Wii, a mini-game collection whose name we like to translate as “My First Wii.” The game and Wiimote will be bundled together for 4800 yen, making it cheaper than a standard 5800 yen Wii game.
This is a deal I could go for, but sadly the article makes no mention of plans for such a deal outside of Japan(and I so wanted that Duck Hunt game, too). But then, there has been talk that first-party Wii games would not be region coded, so importing is an option…
…or would be, except that would no doubt drive the price up. But hey, it’s still a better deal than a Wiimote alone.
- The new Red Steel trailer has me excited. I can’t wait to try it.
- Next-Gen reports an analyst’s view that Wii will be a strong next-gen contender.
- onNintendo gives us a look at the box for the US Wii. Unlike its Japanese counterpart, this one does display the unit itself quite prominently on the box front, and shows no one holding the remote.
- Go Nintendo reports that CNet has discovered that the Wii is supposed to include an all-in-one composite-component cable, not unlike the XBox 360′s, which could be a contributor to the cost.
- Excitetrucks looks like some pretty wild fun.
Also, Wii Trauma Center, Zelda’s control mechanics, the neat looking Wii Sports Boxing, new Super Mario Galaxy footage, and Fire Emblem from Japan.
- As suspected, while US Wii will have Wii Sports included, Japanese Wii will have a free download of Opera until June.
- Wired has a little Q&A which has been covered elsewhere, but for the price of Opera, which could be free, if negotiations go well…
- Kotaku has put together some clips from the event, showing off some Zelda, Excite Truck, and even the Wii game box designs.
- Not surprising, but still disappointing.
N-Europe reports that following on the heels of Super Paper Mario and Zelda(sort of), Donkey Kong Barrel Racing is moving to the Wii.
…is there anything left? Sounds like Zelda‘s release really is the death knell for the GameCube. At least it’s going out with style.
- N-Europe also has some details on Resident Wii-vil.
Yahoo, Claire AND Jill AND Ada!
It’s a Jill Sandwich!
…sorry, just had to do it. But anyway, this sounds like it could be pretty hot. I read that the guy who ported RE4 to the PS2 is doing this one, so if you liked that…
- An interesting turn, from VideoGamesBlogger: MSX games on Virtual Console… but only in Japan?
It would be a shame if this is indeed true, and it didn’t come to the US for this reason or that, as I’d love to try the original versions of Castlevania and Metal Gear(the latter of which I considered buying Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence for).

(1) — How do you know what a Rabbid is, LBD? Sometimes I just don’t know about you… >_> Anyway, the Rabbids are funny, but the game looks terrible. Too many ‘light gun’ style sequences. Next gen, indeed. Is this all that we can expect from third party titles for the Wii? Hopefully not.

I just realized that Rayman is gonna be on all consoles. That’s what I initially thought, but the shooting sequences threw me off.
