"We think PS3 is not a product to be compared with Wii, it is a completely different product. This is a digital hub, that is a games console." -- SCE Australia boss Michael Ephraim

New format

Let it not be said that I don’t listen to what people are saying. Granted, I’ve had another approach to tackle the issue, but for the time being, consider this a stop-gap measure.

Wow, lotta anniversaries this year, or surrounding.

The latest one is that of the legendary(for reasons both right AND wrong) Nintendo 64, for which Mr. Parish has given a good write-up regarding the shortcomings of Nintendo’s somewhat-literal black sheep of its history; he dubs it the “anti-Wii” of Nintendo.

See for yourself how much Nintendo’s direction has seemed to change in the decade that followed the launch of this console, as they were knocked down a few pegs from their position of domination.

I will say one thing for Nintendo in using the cartridge format: I don’t think it was the right decision, obviously, but I don’t think it was necessarily the wrong one, either. I imagine a CD-ROM drive would’ve raised the cost of what they had, and prior to the system’s development(and arguably throughout), the CD-ROM format wasn’t seeing a whole lot being done with it except making bad movies a part of gaming; by the time GOOD things were being done that showed what the format was capable of, it was probably too late to add it, if they wanted to avoid further delays.

Even though Peter Moore made such a comment in EGM, joking that the PS3′s high price point automatically cut the price of the XBox 360, it seems that the company felt a need to further validate the point, saying that they have no plans for a price drop come the Christmas season.

IMO? Who can blame them? They’re taking a hit on the price of hardware as it is, why cut the cost if there’s no need? The only way I might see them reconsider depends on Nintendo’s price, and how adamant they are about the notion that “for the price of a PS3, you can have a 360 and a Wii.”

Sam Kennedy joins in the new favorite American pasttime, that is,
scrutinizing Sony and predicting the future dominance of Microsoft. Gotta warn you, it’s big. With lots of links.

Sort of a history/pre-history of the PS3… “everything everyone’s complained about in one place,” as one reply puts it.

“People are always more than willing to pay extra for cool, even $200 more, but they need to wholeheartedly believe in what they’re supporting. Sony, you need to make PlayStation cool again.”

Meanwhile, John Davison takes the PSP to task.

Game Informer talks to Nintendo COO Reggie Fils-Aime, and the topic of downloadable content comes up. So there’s an option for developers to charge for new content if they so desire, but it sounds like Nintendo may or may not opt for microtransactions, as opposed to new free content.

I’m mixed, though I do see potential, in a way. I sort of like the idea that perhaps, say in Mario Kart DS, if you’re like me and not terribly good at the game, you could buy the chance to use ROB if you wanted to. Or if you’re either really good or a tightwad, you can jump through all the hoops needed to unlock him.

Ditto Final Destination in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Of course, it depends on pricing, too.

My other beef is, I don’t really like intangible content. I’m paranoid that something will wipe out my paid-for goodies.

Seems talk keeps going around a bit that Robin Williams is a possibility to play the Joker in the follow-up to Batman Begins. IGN asks the man himself what he thinks about it, and it makes an interesting read.

Personally, I think he’d do great.

I mean, no one beats Mark Hamill, but all the same, I think Williams could do the character justice.

There’s been speculation about another installment in the greatest trilogy of them all(ha-ha, Star Wars doesn’t count any more!) for what seems like forever, and the reality of it is, probably not going to happen. Still, that doesn’t stop the questions from coming up now and again.

On a related note, I still say Lloyd would be the perfect Dr. Wily if ever a live-action Mega Man movie were made. Yeah, the whole thing would probably be awful, but at least that could be a high point…

Love the press release for it… it should be interesting to see what J. Jonah Jameson has to say about Spider-man’s unveiling…

No, seriously, that’s what they’re being called right now: “New Action Game” and “New RPG.”

N-Philes hopes for deeper gameplay than swinging the remote around, I just hope there’s something deeper than the names. XD

Also at N-Philes, A feature which will ultimately cover some 30 different Nintendo bosses, including Giga Bowser, “Dr. F**king Robotnik,” Liquid Snake, and numerous others.

GameDaily has a little chat with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, and reveals a few snippets about Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, as well as a little of the next generation’s installment, 8th in the series.

…as interviews go, this is perhaps the most un-interview-like interview I’ve ever read.

Next-Gen looks at some trends, such as the much talked-about topic of game controllers.

—–

While they’re at it, they also look at The Ten Greatest Years Of Gaming, out of the approximately 30 there’ve been.

Press The Buttons has a nice link to a piece about the horrors of game-trading.

Oh, snap. This is the room for me! Then again, I can see how sex might be awkward…

—–

Well, maybe not. But I’ve always wondered how I’d do at Mario Teaches Typing. As for the rest of Mario’s Bastard Children… well, I would like to hear how Charles Martinet first did Mario.

But the movie thing doesn’t seem to work for me. :(
