"A good story should provoke discussion, debate, argument...and the occasional bar fight." -- J. Michael Stracyznski

Bah

Guess I’m not a real gamer, then.

Often, the first thing I do is read the manual, more out of tradition than anything. The pictures, the story, things of that nature. Granted, these days, it’s more of a watered-down version of what’s already in the game, but I began the tradition back when Super Mario Bros.‘ narrative about the black magic of the evil Turtle Tribe could only be found within the pages.

Or the journal of Dr. Cain from Mega Man X, or maybe the legends of the Hylians and Ganon from Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

They don’t make ‘em like they used to, though, but I find myself going back through the oldies for kicks. I have Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt right in front of me, for those old diagrams with the neat pics of Mario in a different style from anywhere else.

And frankly, it helps me feel a little more educated on some matters, particularly when someone asks me “how’d you do that?” or “where’d you learn that move?”

Did you know that Shy Guy is playable in Mario Kart DS, or that a second player can control the ducks in Duck Hunt?

Like I said, though, they don’t make ‘em like they used to(and Joystiq linked to that article with one such unique pic from the original Zelda booklet).
