Dreamcast Turns Ten
Today marks the tenth anniversary of the North American release of SEGA’s final console, the Dreamcast. Naturally, there has been a bit of buzz to celebrate. Here are some of the bigger items.
- First dibs should perhaps go to Peter Moore, who uses his EA Sports blog to clarify some things about what went down almost a decade ago as SEGA’s final console came to breathe its last.
- Next up (and I’ll bring this over to PMO in a few months’ time), I give my own fond recollections of the system in “Ten Years of Thinking.”
- Just before the clock stuck midnight on the 8th of September, 2009, SEGA made a very interesting announcement, revealing to GameSpot that they were working on a new 2D, high-definition Sonic the Hedgehog title under the codename “Project Needlemouse.” Sadly, no other details are really available, except that it’s all-new and due in 2010.
Oh, and ignore the Needlemouse website pic. Apparently, that’s fake.
- Speaking of new games, who would have imagined after all this time that the Dreamcast itself would be getting a new racing title?
- If you have a few hours to kill, or are about to take part in a long journey that will give you ample time for reading, then IGN has one of their massive retrospectives for the birthday
boyconsole, weighing in at 11 pages long. Yikes. - Mega Man is not a franchise typically associated with the Dreamcast, but The Mega Man Network shows that the Blue Bomber did in fact have a decent presence over the short life of the system.
- ScrewAttack celebrates in their own unique way, looking back at their Top 10 Dreamcast Games:
I’m waiting to watch this with the wife tomorrow, but I’ll just say that I’m pulling for Crazy Taxi, Cannon Spike, one of the Marvel vs. Capcom games, and at least one Sonic Adventure.
- And last but not least, SEGA of America made a blog post to mark the occasion, with the bulk of it being links to what other sites are saying about the system.
Huh. Now why would anyone do a thing like that?
