The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. -- Terry Pratchett

Points of Interest – 8/28/09

  1. With the PlayStation 3 marked down to $299 and getting a nice, new slim refit, more people are looking at getting one. For those people, Kombo has organized a nice little buyer’s guide for the newcomers.
  2. I find myself envious of Japan, circa 12 years ago. Why? Because they celebrated the 10th anniversary of Rockman (aka Mega Man) with a live-action stage show.
  3. F.L.U.D.D. kind of stunk up the joint when Nintendo strapped him to Mario’s back for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. At least some inventive souls have found a way to make the little Dousing Device useful.
  4. Via GoNintendo: Link and The Legend of Zelda have used several art styles over the years. And now, a collection of 30 different fan works have been collected to diversify the characters even further.

I’m not sure which my favorite is, though I do like the last one.

  5. On a related note: what better way to celebrate 25 years of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than with over 40 different illustrations?

Once more, it’s difficult to choose, though I definitely like Khary Randolph’s; it actually looks like some of the art from the opening of Back to the Sewer. In fact, it may very well be, given that I know the last one is official art.

  6. What the heck, as long as we’re on the site, I might as well catch up.

Next, we have 45 unusual, stylish Super Mario Bros. illustrations. I rather like the Paper Mario pieces by Dirk Erik Schulz, though I wish Mario’s were from The Thousand Year Door, to match Luigi’s.

Waldemar Lene’s is amusing as well, for obvious reasons, while there’s just something cool about Gary Storkamp’s work. Sort of reminds me of one of the old pre-NES box art pieces for Donkey Kong.

  7. Next, it’s TransFormers. Not one, but two articles’ worth, and too many cool pieces to mention– many from official sources that I definitely do recognize, hence lending credence to the Turtles suspicions above.

The first gallery is all manner of TransFormer, whereas the second narrows the focus to Optimus Prime and Megatron.

  8. Finally, I meant to post this a lot sooner, as Nadia Oxford of 1UP’s Retro Games blog welcomes you to your doom in celebration of the 20th anniversary of SEGA Genesis. Please go check it out if you haven’t already.
