Quick Hits

So I lied. Sorta. Just a couple of things I had in my Inbox that I forgot to add, which conveniently help make for a decent mini-update.

  1. So first, there was the word of the CNET editor and his family going missing.

PKManiac1 informs me that regretably, he was found, but not in the sort of way you’d hope to find someone. On the upside, his sacrifice was not in vain, as his family was found and rescued.

  2. HStanton sent me this amusing video which chronicles the Donkey Kong legacy, and with all due respect, somewhat ignorantly ponders the fate of Jr.

The bits at the end are pretty good as well.

    The Kong family tree…

Well, when DKC first came out, the manual (and in-game dialogue) explicitly stated that the original DK aged into Cranky Kong. And one of the assumptions is that DK Jr. aged into the new DK (who wears a “tacky tie,” according to Cranky). It’s impossible for Diddy to be DK Jr., for a couple of reasons:
    1) Diddy seems to be pretty young. If original DK aged, then so would DK Jr.
    2) Diddy isn’t a gorilla. The “Kong Family” seems to include every specie of ape somehow…
    3) Diddy has been officially stated to be the new DK’s nephew.

Also, the video is wrong about the name’s origin. It wasn’t a mistranslation of “Monkey Kong.” It was the closest thing Miyamoto could think of in English to mean “stubborn gorilla.” “Kong” isn’t necessarily a rip-off of “King Kong,” as I don’t think the word is copyrighted. Which I think is one reason Nintendo won the case (the other being Universal did NOT own the rights to King Kong, as it was public domain.

Oh, and the statements about the Kong family tree may or may not be canon. That is in respect to Rare’s DKC series, and it seems Nintendo has either forgotten about that, or overruled it (seeing as how DK’s profile in SSBM, despite being Rare’s DK, mentions how he used to be rivals with Mario, but has since patched things up).

I wonder what would happen if Mario and Cranky met up. I’d bet Cranky would say something to the effect, “Why are you still in your 20s?!”

Well, the new DK and Mario are sort of friendly rivals, it seems.
